Are you going to let your kids paint their rooms crazy colors?

Whenever I browse on MLSLI, I'm turned off by the houses that have brightly painted kids rooms. I like a blank slate. Or at least not gender specific colors (what if I don't have a boy?). So it got me to thinking. I don't want to be one of those parents who doesn't let their kids paint their own rooms. I as a kid had Picasso wallpaper. Different, but not so cool.

So what will you do? Let them paint and then paint it back white when it's time to sell? Can a dark blue wall be painted white again?

I'm totally going to let them paint their rooms whatever color they want. Within reason of course.

I'd re-paint it neutral if we ever decided to sell.

You can always repaint when it's time to sell. I think what I would do is give them a few colors to choose from and then let them pick. That way they still have some say and can pick a color, but you don't end up having to look at some awful color.

Our old townhouse had hot pink paint in the half bathroom. It was hideous and the first thing to be repainted. The previous owner told me she let her son pick out the color.

Re: Are you going to let your kids paint their rooms crazy colors?

they can do what they want- I had a very adult room when I was little- and I HATED it

it was very formal and colonial - my Mom was very traditional- I was finally allowed to re-do it when I was in HS- I was so happy

if and when it's time to sell- If the color was that bad- I would re-paint it- it's only paint

Re: Are you going to let your kids paint their rooms crazy colors?

Absolutely. Luckily for me, this time around, when DS picked his room color, he picked a very nice shade of blue. One that I might have picked out myself. He picked a dusty pink for his sister's room. We intentionally got grey rugs for their rooms, fully expecting one or both of them to pick bizarre colors at some point.....

If I really don't like it, I'll just keep their door closed. Chat Icon

I will, within reason. If we ever sell the house or when they get older, that is what primer and paint are for.....change. And yes, dark blue can be painted over....even black can be painted over, you just have to have the right primer (maybe a couple of coats) and then new paint. Chat Icon

Re: Are you going to let your kids paint their rooms crazy colors?

they will def. be able to choose their paint colors...but I will repaint when it is time to sell....when we bought our house, one of the bedrooms was a really bright yellow, with blue trim, and red doors...they also left the curtains, which were fire trucks, and had those colors in themChat Icon

I will but I'll help them choose a color.

I wanted a pink room when I was young. I picked out a pepto-bismol pink. What I thought looked good on the card, did not look good on the wall. It was awful and I had to live with it for years.

Wow! If I bought a house and that was still on the walls, I would probably keep it and make it into a cool study.

Not my toddler but, my older kids! Heck yeah. My friends mom let her do her room however she wanted. We got a ton of small cans of paint and made her room nuts. We drew all sorts of paintings and words and stuff. Was it awful looking? Sure! But it didn't hurt anyone and we loved it!!

LOL I did this too.. And worse yet.. I had a carpet in the same color. It was pretty bad.. but, I never admitted it then because it was mine!

I loved it when I was 15 and got to paint my new room. I did a light blue with clouds and then wrote in sharpie all over the walls. Chat Icon

As a toddler no, but as they get older I will let them explore their creativity, of course within reason!

yes nothing too loud but a nice shade. i think when ppl see a blue, purple or pink room you automatically know its a kids room and you should repaint Chat Icon

I don't have kids, but from a buyer's perspective, I bought my co-op from a 20 something married couple & it looked like a pre-school anyway, so it's not t end of the world th if kids did it.

At least it wouldn't be the master bedroom & living room. Chat Icon

My cousin painted his room Tropicana Cabana (bright turquoise) & I don't think it was a problem when his parents sold the house.

Re: Are you going to let your kids paint their rooms crazy colors?

Plenty of primer and a new coat can fix any color.
We painted our house new colors when we moved in because the rooms looked dull.
We've changed the 2nd guestroom from a horrible sea bluish, to a horrible dark maroon to the babyish blue it is now.
The primer always covers everything.

Thanks! I grew up in a house of wallpaper, so I haven't had any painting experience.

I will never forget what my dad said to me when I was a teenager...He said "I don't care if you paint your room black as long as you don't do drugs and you are a good kid " Chat Icon

I will let them paint whatever they want...it can always be repainted.

Re: Are you going to let your kids paint their rooms crazy colors?

Sure, it's only paint -

I don't care what color the walls are - but I DO care if the room looks like a tonado went through it .........

So that's going to be my rule - YOU want to decorate it? YOU have to keep it clean -

TOTALLY. i am a firm believer in freedom of creative expression. a bdrm is a sanctuary so why not let the person who resides in it make it their own? and as others mentioned, its only paint.

Re: Are you going to let your kids paint their rooms crazy colors?

Heck, my mom repainted my room for me when I went away somewhere for a week....she had bought different size styrofoam stars and painted them different shades of yellow and a moon and hung them from my ceiling with that thin fishline.....she even hand painted the border all the way around...oh yeah, and the walls were dark blue

I would totally let me kids do whatever they wanted to their rooms, as long as they keep it clean lol

AND the people we sold the house to loved it!

Re: Are you going to let your kids paint their rooms crazy colors?

Not right now but when he gets older yes.

As long as you are willing to repaint when it's time to put your house on the market, it's fine.
