Anyone's DC have issues pooping...

We went to the ped GI today. Basically, she believes DD's anus doesn't open up to let the poop out and that's why she's straining so hard. She is also testing her stool, bc it was harder than she'd like. So we are giving 1/2 oz of prune juice once a day to help with that.

She said the anus issue is common among newborns, that sometimes their little bodies just don't know what to do yet. It should resolve itself within a few weeks. She thinks that because DD is "backed-up", she has a little reflux from that. She didn't want to give her meds for that because it doesn't seem too bad.

Just wondering if anyone else every experienced this? Did it really resolve itself?

TIA!

Yes, DD always had pooping issues (still does at almost 10 months)...its gotten better but early on we had to use suppositories sometimes, prune juice in every bottle, prunes mixed w/her oatmeal, thermometer trick (didn't always work for us)

Re: Anyone's DC have issues pooping...

My son had the same issues,(he is 15 weeks now) he also is on med for acid reflux. he had an extremly hard time going poop, my ped switched his formula to gentlease(he still on it) he would only go every 2 or 3 days. then he told us to try the 1oz prune juice to 1oz water it helped alot, it is just maybe the past 4 weeks ago he started going every other day and now he is going 2 times a day! My ped told me the same thing that newborns are not sure how make the poop pass sometimes and some babies take longer than others to learn. He still gets his prune juice and water but it is now 1/2oz juice to 1 1/2 water it helps keep his poop softer.

Prune juice didnt work for DD.(well, it did as an infant but not as a toddler) she has been on miralax as per the GI for 1.5 yrs now. Waiting for the issue to clear itself up.Chat Icon Hes run many tests on her and everything keeps coming back fine. He said some children just have cronic constipation.

YES! My ds (almost 17 months) has had issues since birth. He is ALWAYS constipated. He takes Miralax everyday and still doesnt have a BM everyday! The Miralax does help so that he isnt straining.

Yes. Since (almost) day 1.

When DS was a few weeks old, we had to give him a glycerine suppository. Not much later (sorry, I dont recall the timeframe) we stated with prune juice in bottles, then when that didnt do the trick, we tried Soy formula. That didn't work, so back to regular formula with Karo syrup. That finally started working and we ended up weening him off around 1 yr bday.

Re: Anyone's DC have issues pooping...

thanks girls! I never heard of this, so I thought it was odd and was pretty worried.
DD does poop at least once a day, but she struggles with it soo much. she is on Nutramigen, so the formula most likely isn't the issue.
I gave her a bottle with the prune juice at 7 and put her to sleep..she's still sleeping peacefully..I can't remember last time she slept 3 straight hours without waking and screaming once. I didn't think it would work so quickly...but just maybe...Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
I'm also letting her sleep on her belly- as per the dr's suggestion- while I am awake and have her in a visible spot so that I can keep an eye on her.
Oh, if these things work, I will be so happy! My poor DD was suffering so much!

both my DC have issues pooping.

It started at 1 for my DD and she has been on Miralax since then (she's almost 3.5 now). It works great for her.

For my DS it started as a newborn. I believe he started lactulose at 6 months and we switched to Miralax at 1. He's still on it as well - he'll be 2 in June. He still will get constipated every now and then even on the miralax but it definitely helps most of the time. It stinks!!! He really suffers.
