Anyone have DirectTV?

I'm trying to decide between DirectTV and optimum for my new house. If you have DirectTV, or know anyone who does, can you share your experience? Does pricing seem good for what you get?

Re: Anyone have DirectTV?

I happen to LOVE DirecTV. I had it when I lived OOS and actually have them right now while I wait for my FIOS appt..

I will tell you that I didn't have any issues with them during the hurricane. I had TV the entire time.

Re: Anyone have DirectTV?

I have DishNetwork, and the only time we lost any signal during the entire hurricane was when the power glitched, and the DVR/receiver had to restart. If I had a UPS on the receiver, we would never have lost the signal at all.

We have DirecTV and I love it. Once in a while we will lose our signal if the weather is bad out but it's never been for long periods of time.

ETA: Verizon for phone and internet

I have FiOS (I realize you're looking for DirectTV, but I'm answering from just a generic satellite perspective)

How much is your bill in total if you don't mind me asking?

Your monthly bill must be high no? I always thought getting a bundle would be cheaper?

Re: Anyone have DirectTV?

DirecTV user here too

I love it. We get a lot more heavy storms here in TX and high winds and I've still only lost service once (during an extreme storm 60mph gusts). But never needed to call them to come out and readjust, service came back shortly thereafter.

Price wise: for me it was cheaper than Time Warner (yuck) and currently its about the same price as our version of Fios (ATT Uverse). And my favorite part is I LOVE how much space I have on my DVR! I have googleTV as well but its nice that DirecTV also lets you stream youtube now (or so I hear) because we watch AJ on the big screen or let her watch her favorite YouTube clips (aka muppets and old school sesame / mickey)

Definitely would be cheaper with a bundle. DH is holding out for FIOS.

Would love to hear info about pricing and your internet service, if you don't mind. I'm trying to choose between Optimum and DirecTV, and thought I should stick with one or the other for all 3 to get the best deal. DirecTV said they would use AT&T for my internet and phone if I got the bundle with them. Optimum said that if I did that, my internet would be slow, and I would be subject to more state and local taxes. I didn't think it would make sense price wise to get DirectTV for Cable, Optimum for internet, and then maybe something else for phone, but maybe I'm wrong?

Re: Anyone have DirectTV?

I've been on the phone with everyone these last few weeks lol

I wanted to originally get FIOS, LOVE FIOS! But was told it wasn't available in my area SO I got a bundle with Directv and have Verizon for DSL and phone service..for 59.99/month

GREAT! BUT because of the work stoppage AND the hurricane, I still have not had DSL/phone installation BOO, only Directv and they don't know when they will be able to fullfill the rest of this order.. ARGH,

SO, I've been on the manhunt.. Cablevision said they would do the triple play for 69.99 but I HATE Cablevision :( I know, I know you can stream it online but I just dislike them and their service..

So NOW, I called Verizon back up again and it appears I CAN get FIOS.. so now they are going to do that hookup and it'll be 69.99/month (tried gettng them down to match their DSL bundle but they wouldn't budge).. but I have to wait until Sept. 26 for the installation..

FUN FUN FUN! lol

Re: Anyone have DirectTV?

We have DirecTv...we got it as a bundle through Verizon.

i LOVE DirecTv. I don't know if we had tv THROUGH the storm, because we lost power. I do know that my parents, once we hooked up the generator, had their DirecTv running, and ours was back on with no issues once we got power back. Some of my friends with Cable STILL have no TV.

As for internet/phone, we got a bundle through Verizon, so we are using them for all three right now. Its fine...Our internet and phone were back up and running immediately after the storm as well (we do NOT have FIOS in our area, this is Verizon's DSL...the internet and the phone through the internet)

The only downside was having to sign a 2 year contract with DirecTv, with hefty early cancellation fees...but I love it, so I have no intention of having to worry about those fees!!

The internet through Cable is $49.99 per month. Honestly I wouldn't recommend it. It's sllloooooowww at times. Whenever it gets especially slow, I end up with a salesman knocking on my door offering to sell me a "boost". Coincidence? Probably not. We'll switch to FIOS as soon as it comes to my area.

Ah, thank you for that. Optimum was telling my my internet would be faster through them as opposed to AT&T (DirecTV). I have Fios now and love it, but it isn't available at my new house.

i do have to warn you - if you live in a wooded area or have a lot of trees in your neighborhood, you cannot get direct tv.

we have it - recommended it to a friend in her new house. The guy came to install and he couldn't get a clear shot of the sky (because of all the trees) - so the signal never went about like 29 or so %...she couldn't get it...

we LOVE it though - we did lose it during the storm, but the dvr still worked and we had plenty to catch up on...so we didn't mind..

Re: Anyone have DirectTV?

we're investigating a switch to Verizon/DirecTV currently. I don't know anyone who has DirecTV that doesn't love it.

I have had it with Cablevision. I understand why the cable is out THIS time, but really the lack of communication, the inability to get in touch with them (not just now!) the rudeness of the reps........ the constant outages we have (we were out the weekend before Irene too).. but ultimately the money.

We pay them almost $200/month for phone, cable and internet. And that is the amount AFTER fighting with them to lower it/give us a deal. Internet is so slooooooow, constantly "hiccupping" and I swear we are being throttled at times. And if you call to complain about the internet being slow, like a PP mentioned, all they try and do is upsell you to their craptastic "boost" service.

HATED Optimum for one HUGE reason.............their DVR box S-U-C-K-S!!! I hated it!! It didn't create folders, it didn't recognize conflicts, it had no program manager, it was AWFUL!!!!! We switched to Directv and we LOOOOVE it! Their DVR box is amazing, just like a TIVO, and it has hours upon hours of storage. I would NEVER go back to Cablevision!

Re: Anyone have DirectTV?

I have it as well in Pa. I will say when we first got in when we moved here in 2008 they were deceptive in selling us the Mets and SNY network..insisting we would have games; however, when we got here we had the channels, but nothing on it..and called customer service, they were llike, yeah, b/c of black out restrictions.

we were stuck with a 2 year agreement. I decided to add the MLB package for DH that year as a surprise so he can get his mets games. On 3 different phone calls I was assured that this $250 package would give us mets and yankee games. they even advertise up to 80 out of market games a week I think. Sure enough, we go to watch it and there is one game..1 GAME available and it wasnt even a met game. All b/c of blackout restrictions which supposedly shouldn't be with the MLB package.

we amazingly got our $$ back on that b/c we literally cancelled within hours. they were on my **** list for 2 years and we switched to comcast tv (as they were our phone and internet provider); and i have to say they sucked even worse. So we had that about a month and went back to direct tv since the equipment was still on the roof.

Almost another 2 years later and its been pretty good and the packages are reasonable. and we hardly have service issues even in bad weather. so i will say that after a rough start its been fine since.

although DH is Pizzzzzed that they are offering the NFL ticket to new customers for FREE and when he called to inquire about even getting a discount on the package they would not budge. But we did get money off our bill for 6 months and they offered us new HD equipment if we do auto pay. so i might take them up on that.
