Anyone have any luck getting a breast pump covered by insurance?

I just called mine up (Empire BC/BS) and they said a purchase is covered up to 90% of the allowance...whatever this means.

Anyway I called Lewin medical supply to try and get an answer and they are getitng back to me on this.

I was just wondering if anyone has had any luck and how they went about doing it. The pump I want is $$$ and it would be awesome if it was covered!

Wow that is awesome! Were you allowed to buy it anywhere or did it have to be from a medical supply company? Do you mind me asking what insurance you have?

Yes girls definitely ask!!! It was a tip I saw in the baby bargains book. Check if they will cover rentals too!

FYI - just called mine (oxford/uhc freedom) and they said the following:

100% coverage if purchased in network (like from a medical supply store etc) but only if the baby went to nicu. no pre-certs needed unless its a rental, over $500, custom, or repair.

so its worth calling Chat Icon

I just called my ins company (GHI). I was told I have to meet the $100 deductible and then they would cover the rest, but it has to be purchased from a medical supply company.

NYSHIP The Empire Plan makes you go through UHC and they do not cover breast pumps at all. Luckily I still have my pump from my DD.

Re: Anyone have any luck getting a breast pump covered by insurance?

Empire BC/BC said 100 pct covered but I have to use a durable med equip supplier. I'm going to get the free one thru them.

I bought a medella from ebay for 60.00 if anyone wants to buy it from me. It has a crack in one of the valves but that doesn't effect the performance. Its the one in the bag. Not the back pack, the other bag.

Blue Cross said I am covered 50% but it has to be from an in network durable medical equip supplier. I got the list of places and so far 10 for 10 don't carry pumps...

Nope and I have a medical issue that made a pump necessary. I went to the top of the top and in reality it's not covered. I had Anthem BC/BS

ETA: I could have had my rental covered but I found that out after the fact and trying to get all the paper worked would have been a nightmare since I hadn't saved it.

The person I spoke to at GHI was so surprised at my question and said that no, nothing but medical services was covered with my plan. I'm tempted to call back because the lady seemed so lost, maybe she didn't know??

On a side note, if you buy from a lactation consultant or other supplier, you can save a LOT.

For example, I called Add a Little Love, and they have the Medela Freestyle (normally $379) for $289 plus $8 shipping!

And the Pump in Style Advanced is also about a $70-100 savings. Definitely worth looking into!

The only "bad" thing is that Add a Little Love does not accept any returns, so you have to buy when you know for sure you'll be able to use your pump.

I bought my medela pump in style from this website and paid $224, no tax and free s&h. YOu also et phone support from them after you buy the pump, which has been so helpful.
http://awaybabyessentials.com/item_13/Medela-Pump-In-Style-Advanced-Backpack.htm

They also have the one where the motor comes out for maybe $50 or so more.

I called my insurance company after reading this thread to find out they cover the pump at 100% but it has to be purchased from select vendors (this vendor was not). Oh well, at least I got a great price on it.

I have Empire BC/BS

They gave me a few in-network medical supply companies but also gave me one that is out-of-state but has free shipping so I called them first since the rep told me they definitely have breast pumps. Check and see if they are in-network for you too...

The info is:

Edge Park
Te: 1800-321-0591

They have the Medela Freestyle and they processed my order and all my information for me today. I will find out tomorrow whether or not it is covered and what I would owe. Fingers crossed I can get the 90% discount!! Chat Icon

I was hoping someone who had GHI would post! Did they say how to go about this? Is there a particulare meddical store to use?
