Curious what this issue could be. There isn't the big ball in the tank..if that helps at all. Chat Icon

Looks like this:

The chain seems a little loose, but it's hard to tell from the photo. The chain is attached to the flush handle and the flapper at the bottom of the tank. If the chain is loose, it won't pull up the stopper, so it won't flush. That's all that makes a toilet flush. You can force it to flush by just pulling up the stopper (don't worry, the water is clean! Chat Icon )

Thanks for responding!
That isn't my toilet - just an example. Chat Icon

But a quick google search makes me think I need to replace the fill valve.

I wonder if this is something I can actually do myself?! Eek

So it technically flushes, it just doesn't fill (and without refilling, it can't flush again....)

My 11yo DS replaced the fill valve in one of our toilets. With my supervision, of course, but he did a lot of it himself.

I can swap out one of those valves in about 5 minutes.
Turn off water from wall
drain top tank (use rags if needed)
disconnect supply line from wall at bottom of tank(some water will come out, but not much)
unscrew valve from outside of tank, where water connect
pull out valve

reverse steps to replace fixture

See, piece of cake! Chat Icon Chat Icon

It is not difficult to replace the guts of a toilet and you can watch a video from Home Depot to DIY. You need the parts and one of those enormous wrenches. When you drain the top tank just be sure to put a small bucket under to catch any water that might drop out.

Thank you! I'm inspired. Gonna try it. I'll report back. Fingers crossed I don't flood my house.

I replaced the valve on my toilet myself too! My DH was seriously impressed, lol. Not sure if you've done this already but I would Google the problem you are having AND the brand/model of toilet you have. I was able to narrow down my exact problem and how to fix it by doing that. Good luck!!!!
