Any Dr.'s on here or parents know the answer to this q: If you receive the Chicken Pox Vaccination can you still get Shingles later in life?

I can't seem to find a straight answer to this anywhere and I am wondering if anyone on here knows the answer to this. Basically my issue is this - I know you get Shingles later in life from the dormant Chicken Pox virus in your body. Now, if you have had the vaccine (which is a live virus) assuming you still have immunity later in life are you also immune to ever getting shingles?

TIA so much!

Vaccine causing shingles

Also read this book:

Link to book

The book talks about every vaccine but when it comes to the CP vaccine, it talks about how doctors are seeing more and more cases of Shingles in children when it used to only be common among people who were 50+

If you have had the vaccination or have had the chicken pox, The virus lies dormant in your body and can pop up anytime in the form of shingles. If you haven't had the vaccination or haven't had the chicken pox and you are exposed to the virus, you will get the chicken pox. They don't know what causes the virus to resurface once it is dormant in your body. I am pretty sure that re-exposure to the virus alone would not cause one to develop shingles. But a person/child can develop chicken pox from exposure to someone with shingles if the have not had the vaccination or have had the chicken pox. One is no long contagious for either disease when the blisters have dried up and crusted over.

Thanks ladies - just wanted to update in case anyone ever searches for this. I asked our ped and the answer is yes - you can get shingles - the virus lives in your body the same as if you had the disease. I was looking for a redeeming quality for this shot and I just cannot find one! The worst part is in my research I saw that this vaccine is also causing a shingles epidemic. But, no worries b/c Merck has the answer - everyone should get the shingles vaccine now Chat Icon

I am too old to have gotten the vaccine but I had chicken pox bad as a child, and got shingles when I was preggo with DS (age 37).

Whether you get the vaccine or actually have the chicken pox at some point, isn't your risk for getting shingles the same since they both involve a live virus?

Maybe but I am guessing the shot causes a weaker immunity to CP than having the actual disease, therefore increasing the risk of developing shingles. Just a guess anyway, if there is a link that is.

I am too old to get the vaccination either, but I had chicken pox bad when I was 7 and got shingles when I was 28. Thank god it was caught early...I went to the ER thinking I had a bad ear infection....because my doctor told me if I didn't go there and waited it probably would have been a lot worse and the meds would not have done much. They got me on meds pretty fast and it made it a lot less painful, but it still took me 5-7 days to feel better and I still have phanthom pain in my ear on cold nights. I heard this is common if you get shingles in your head which I had.
