Am I just being a paranoid new mom or should I be concerned?

I am EBF my DD who is 4wks old. I feel like she is not eating often enough. She eats roughly every 3-3 &1/2hrs. At night she goes for at least 4 hour stretches, sometimes closer to 5hrs. My mom keeps telling me that she is fine and to be thankful that she is so good. If she wasn't, she would be a miserable baby - which she is not. She has no trouble sleeping and really only cries when she is hungry or bored and wants to be in a different position. I keep trying to tell myself that she is content and that's the reason she doesn't eat as often. Do you think this is OK, or do you think there might be a problem?

Sounds okay to me.

How much does she eat at once?

Well, since I am BF...hard to tell how much, but I would say that she actively eats anywhere from 15-22mins per feeding

As long as she has enough wet and dirty diapers and is gaining weight, I wouldn't worry at all. She'll let you know when she's hungry.

DS typically ate every 3 hours at that age. The only time he really ate more often was when he was going through a growth spurt.

i know it is hard but you have a very happy, content baby, and you should just enjoy her. Chat Icon as long as she is gaining weight and has several wet and dirty diapers a day she is fine, really!

That sounds pretty normal to me. Like another poster said, if the baby is making plenty of wet and dirty diapers, you're in good shape.

Sounds like she is doing great---I agree with the PP, if she is content, making wet/dirty diapers & growing well, you are doing a great job. Try to enjoy her!! Chat Icon

Re: Am I just being a paranoid new mom or should I be concerned?

I agree with everyone. I too EBF and never knew how much DD was eating. But she always had wet/poopy diapers and would stop when she was done...so I just trusted she was getting enough.

Re: Am I just being a paranoid new mom or should I be concerned?

Before I opened this and read it, I said to myself - whatever the question, she's probably being a paranoid new mom. Now that I've read it, you are asking the same question every single BFing mom has asked - is my DC getting enough to eat.

The only way to tell with a BF baby, is the number of wet/dirty diapers per day, and the child's weight gain at their well visits. My hospital gave me a chart to check off dirty/wet diapers and feedings for the first two weeks. After the chart was completely filled in, I didn't bother with creating my own, b/c after the first two weeks I had been to the ped w/ DD and she had assured me of the weight gain.

At 4 weeks your DC should have had enough ped visits that your mind should be at ease. If it's not, then call and ask questions about the number of wet/dirty diapers and keep track for your own peace of mind.
