"I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Retiring hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." Martin Luther King Jr.

I don't know how I feel about everyone referencing this quote. It's a BEAUTIFUL quote...

But... love will not end terrorism or the hatred of the western world that drives these radical Islamic Extremists like Bin Laden. The hatred & love that Dr. King speaks of does not relate to the conflict of ideologies between terrorists and America.

I gotta agree with this...like another poster said above, I don't know if its rejoice that people feel that he was killed but more about the fact that he was captured (and HE chose not to surrender--he fought back). So its a celebration that a mass murderer was found after a decade-long hunt.

Re: Am I alone in this?

You're not alone. I've been feeling very emotional about the whole thing - so my instinct is to behave quietly and be reflective for a while. I certainly think it's good news, but I don't feel like celebrating in the streets over it.

I don't begrudge those who do though. Everyone has their own way of processing and dealing with things, and I can understand in the abstract that others may feel nothing but jubilation, and celebrating is the most natural thing in the world for them.

The image of people in the middle east celebrating the fall of the twin towers did cross my mind... but IMO, this is not the same thing at all. Back then, they were rejoicing over the death of innocent civilians. Yesterday, the people in DC and NY we saw on TV were rejoicing over the death of one man who had the blood of thousands on his hands. Not a good comparison - so I hope that it's not taken it that way by people in the rest of the world who may see it on the news.

I agree with this wholeheartedly

Since this happened I've also realized that if u don't have someone you are close with who is or has been in the military than you don't truly realize the impact this has had. It's not just the the people who died or were injured. Soldiers have gone there and witnessed the unspeakable and it changes who they are. Everyone has been affected in some way and it's not for the good. I have been seeing a lot of comments on Facebook, blogs etc that are just truly disrespectful to the men and women in uniform. I get that people disagree with the war and I respect that, but IMO u just don't know until you live it.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

You are not alone. A couple of my friends just posted this quote on Facebook.

"I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that." --Martin Luther King, Jr.

I agree with you about the celebrating in the streets. It just doesn't sit well with me.

This was my status update yesterday, one of my FB friends posted and I reposted.
OP I agree with you and I know exactly what you mean and how you feel.

I posted this quote too but I totally agree with what you are saying. I was really using the quote to reference the uneasy feeling I had with all of the rejoicing in the streets. It makes me feel very uncomfortable!

We will always need the help of our brave soldiers to try and contain terrorism, no amount of love will do that - I get that.

No you are not alone. The mood, like this is a joyful time, makes me uncomfortable. The celebrations in the street don't sit right with me either. I understand why some feel closure over this, but I personally do not believe this will change much. There is far to much hate in this world.

YES. Exactly. After one of my college friends read that quote for the umpteenth time on her news feed, she wrote this very condescending "unicorns and rainbows" thing which I felt was patronizing towards those who posted the MLK quote. Yeah, maybe I'm a peace and love kinda gal...but I'm not naive either. I know it doesn't work that way. It's just a world I wish I lived in. And like Tilde, I posted it in response to the celebrations going on, just because it didn't sit right with me.

I am celebrating the fact that al qaeda no longer has their leader. I am celebrating the fact that there is hope that they will not be able to continue the way they had been without this leader. That the world may finally see the end to a horrible terrorist organization. All of these things outweigh the loss of Osama's life in this case - so I do see this as a time to celebrate.

I completely agree-very well stated! I couldn't think of how to put my feelings about this into words. Using love was not an option for getting rid of Bin Laden...so I don't really know that this quote is applicable in that sense.

Re: Am I alone in this?

Lastnight I was watching Dr. Drew. He had on the families of 9/11 victims.

At the end he said something that I could really relate to. He said that whenever he saw/thought of the loss and pain of the families of the 9/11 vicitims he felt ANGER real primal ANGER and a want for revenge. He said that it made him happy that Osama was killed.

Now I consider Dr. Drew to be a very fair, kind, intelligent person who probaly almost always does/feels the "right" thing, kwim? But I totally agree with him on this.

No I would not celebrate and I am uneasy about that.

But I AM happy this man is dead. It makes me uncomfortable to say that bc I have NEVER felt that way about anyone in my life and hope I never do again bc it IS a terrible feeling, but is how I feel if I am being honest.

Re: Am I alone in this?

One thing I am happy about is that maybe MAYBE on some level the people who have fought and died, and the families who ahve gone without their loved ones in this "war on terror" can feel that it was not in vain.

I feel it had to be done in a way to show that the US won't just accept being attacked and let perpetrators of evil get away with it. So on that level I feel like "yeah, mission accomplished"...I also feel like it's a long road and I'm worried.

The dancing in the streets thing is just...I don't know..for me, based on how I feel is an inappropriate response. I don't think anyone is WRONG for doing that or feeling that way. Like I said I was surprised by it because it's so far from the reaction I felt/expected.

But in terms of the way things are viewed, people danced int eh streets after 9/11 because they felt there was a victory over their enemy. They felt it was revenge for many deaths of innocents of their own people. It's a matter of perspective. I feel like on a larger scale, the dancing in the streets is maybe asking for more retaliation as justified as we may feel in doing so. But I personally don't even think I would dance on Hitler's grave.

I can't celebrate, or really understand the purpose for celebrating. All the people who died, directly and indirectly, are still gone and it is no less tragic to me. What I feel is an odd mix of relief because he's dead and apprehension because I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Its not a literal quote. Meaning I doubt anyone who posted it, lives it or believes in it thought that maybe if we sent a marine in there offering Osama a huge Hug and forgiveness that that would be the answer either.

I can only speak for me, but it was more of something I needed to remind myself yesterday because of the principles and beliefs I have, and how a situation like that can lead to disregarding all I believe in and letting hate and violence win, or simply letting them into my life(head) at all. I dont want to harden my heart, I dont want to believe in evil and hate and intolerence, but I'm not stupid, I'm not un-educated, I'm not naive...but I can 'wish' that if everyone poured love into every action life would be all together a different experience. But, its a wish, a sentiment towards a belief..I believe it's partial fantasy and I do think others do too.

I think some posted that quote just to remind themselves that acknowledging evil ( even the death of) makes it easy to get sucked into hate.

In light of 9/11 and the almost 10 years spent fighting a war it doesn't surprise me (or bother me really) that people are celebrating Bin Laden's death. And honestly, sometimes an eye for an eye is the BEST form of retaliation. He was a disgusting piece of $hit that deserved to die. He added NO value to this planet and his being alive, whether captured or free, was doing nobody any good. I am not dancing in the streets but for all the lives lost in 9/11 and for all the troops that have fought and died over the years I am MORE than happy to see that waste of life rot in h-e-l-l. Re: Am I alone in this?

You can't compare people dancing in the streets on 9/11 celebrating the deaths of innocent people to people celebrating a job well done by our military in capturing an evil terrorist.

I am not rejoicing in his death, but I am pleased that one more bad guy is dead and our military might be closer to coming home.

Re: Am I alone in this?

Sorry but after the lives he destroyed in 9/11, I would have loved to see them drag his body through the streets of NYC.

ETA: While other posted the quote about not being able to rejoice over his death, my facebook quote was "I cannot imagine the pride and satisfaction that SEAL had when he put a bullet in his head".

Everyone will react to the situation differently. I have no remorse for him. I dont even think they should have given him a "proper" burial because I don't consider being buried (some alive) under thousands of pounds of debris and rubbal a proper burial for our 9/11 victims.

Re: Am I alone in this?

I don't have a problem with how others react to it - I personally don't see any reason to celebrate - it's 10 years after the fact - really? in 10 YEARS I think the guy has had more than enough time to find himself a successor or 2, or 200 !!

I can see how and why it would give a lot of people some closure, and I am grateful for that - but otherwise, hs death is just symbolic and nothing else IMO

Agreed. This man waged a war against us...unprovoked and took thousands of American lives here on US soil...that does not count our brave men and women fighting overseas who also lost their lives.
I don't understand how anyone can not want to rejoice in this victory. The war against terrorists will never be over but we brought down a HUGE factor in it...and after 10 years of searching and countless American lives lost here and overseas.

Honestly I cried tears of joy when I found out....for the families and friends who lost loved ones on 9/11, for the family and friends who lost soldiers overseas during this war and for the ones that remain. Those are my priortiies...the INNOCENT victims over here and the INNOCENT victims over there who were terrified of Osama and his army.

our celebrating now and their celebrating then are two different things to me.

their attack on us was kind of out of nowhere. it was an uncalled for act of terror - and they celebrated the meaningless death of thousands of innocent people.

our killing of bin laden was revenge. revenge for the thousands of people he ordered to kill. revenge for the fear and sadness of the people in this country since that day.

now, if we celebrated every time our soldiers killed a bunch of innocent people... that would be wrong. celebrating the death of the mastermind of such a horrible event in american history... it's not right but if people want to celebrate, i'm not going to judge them for it.

the reality is that bin laden was killed. they're going to try and retaliate whether we celebrate or not.

Chat Icon Chat Icon Yes ! I agree.
I see nothing wrong with people celebrating that fall of a man so utterly devoid of humanity. The world is a better place without him and I feel that some degree of justice has finally been done. After the atrocities he committed, I feel people can react however they like. We should not forget the footage of celebration on 9-11 captured in a number of foreign countries.

I understand the feeling - on both sides (re the Palestinians on 9/11) - All the citizens of the world are fed so much propaganda, instead of cause/effect.

I was uncomfortable with it all as well, but understand that this does help with closure.
