Anyone worried about the enviroment and climate change?

I know that COVID and vaccines and mandates are dominating everyone's mind but what really worries me is the environment and the climate change crisis.

It really scares me about what kind of world my child will be living in in the next 5, 10, 20 years. Super storms, heat, rising sea levels....

Check out this site for examples of what rising sea levels will look like if we stay on our current projected course of warming to 3 degrees above pre-industrial levels.

Picturing Our Future

This is what keeps me up at night.

Yes - I can't even think about it sometimes. Have you watched Before the Flood with Leonardo DiCaprio? I feel like I never want to eat red meat or eat anything with Palm Oil ever again.

Anyone worried about the enviroment and climate change?

Yes, I have been concerned about this for the last decade. I try my best to be mindful of my actions in terms of energy usage and consumption of goods and food. My husband and I are trying to instill these same ideals in our son. We are out of a buy nothing group which has helped to reduce our footprint. We compost. We rarely throw out food. We are minimalists by nature. We walk places instead of driving when possible.

A little bit. But climate change is a GLOBAL issue and while it is good to do our part, Americans are not the main cause. Unless most countries especially China get on board, it won’t matter much what we do here.

Totally agree, climate change is a big concern for me as well, however we are so small compare to what other countries are doing such as China and India.

The US ranks second behind China for CO2 emissions. India is third. America plays a large part in this. Why do China and India emit so much? To supply us with goods. I offered my brother and SIL gently used baby items so they didn’t need to buy new ones for their third child since they threw out all their baby stuff. They were appalled and said they needed new stuff. I only had one kid and some of the items were in like new condition.

No. I'll have to look for that one.

Climate change is currently affecting weather patterns. More extreme storms, more forest fires, more flooding. It’s already here.

Great points.

On top of that, it's not only about what's happening now, though. You have to put it in historical context. It's about the contribution over time. When you consider that lens, Americans absolutely ARE the main cause, along with other countries who went through industrialization and the resulting urbanization at the same time as us, or earlier (Britain.) We were able to pollute without the scrutiny emerging nations now have to deal with.

While China (and India et. al) should obviously not get a pass, we have a global and moral responsibility to support those nations when/if necessary to modernize cleanly. It's the only way to right the scales with what we did with impunity.

I'm extremely concerned myself; I do what I can on my end. I'm currently doing some activism in that area with the Climate Reality project.

It's scary particularly living on the coast and I worry about what this will mean for DS and his future family.

Are you serious? Do you have children and think you might have grandchildren and so forth one day that will need to have a healthy planet to live on?

To the OP- yes. I lam kept up at night about this. I can't even click the link you posted. We are getting an electric car, I want solar panels etc. But I'm afraid it may be too late. It is terrifying.

I think even more important is that we stop consuming so much red meat and products made with palm oil. But it's hard...

A concern, yes , but to be terrified? Nope.

We can't worry about future generations that far ahead as I doubt our ancestors stayed awake at night worrying about us.

Of course. I worry how bad things will be even for our own children. Everything that we do (or don't do) RIGHT NOW will affect future generations including our own children's futures. Even small measures can have a big impact so I try and do what I can to decrease my own carbon footprint. A few small changes now can prevent so much damage later.

What is even more unfortunate to me is how many people don't take this seriously and continue to take our natural resources for granted. Global warming and the damage its done to our climate is easily seen just in our lack of seasons here in the northeast. Falls are endlessly warmer, summers are blazing hot and we barely have spring anymore. Ice caps are melting at rapid rates, raging forest fires are becoming worse year over year, we're seeing epic level droughts and the list keeps going on.

But hey, what can we expect from a nation where half of its citizens don't trust or believe in science, think everything is a media conspiracy and don't have the foresight to consider the impact to future generations, generations of their OWN family. It's sad really, I think we are doomed quite honestly. Unfortunately, there is just too much ignorance and stupid to contend with no matter how hard some people try to correct the situation and do the right thing.

Maybe at least partly because the impact of climate change is happening NOW, not in 100 yrs - it's real now. When storms hit, when there's flooding, and fires rage like never before, it's because of climate change - now. (Although I guess since the fires are not on the east coast, YOU don't care about that, becuase it doesn't effect you personallyChat Icon ). And to say you don't care about future generations, the future of our planet, well....there's just no words

You don't find that to be a very selfish statement? Will your kids have kids? Will they have kids? If it doesn't affect you or anyone you know, it doesn't matter? Just want to be sure I understand your point. And this response is to ANYONE that thinks this same way. Not just you.

She is repeating what I said

Its doesn't matter because it's too late. I can worry myself all I want and recycle all I want but what's the sense of worrying when every other entitled pig I see is throwing their trash all over the highway? I recently found out that the things we recycle all get thrown out. Every time I go grocery shopping there is so much waste. All the plastic packaging with everything and we think we are recycling and they just throw it out. And it's more expensive to shop sustainable environmentally friendly companies. We failed to respect nature while we were here and this is the result. Ill do what I can while I enjoy the here and now because face it, nothing matters in the end...

This, coming from the person that blasts their AC in their nice, big house allllll summer long because they don't want to be a little warm. Maybe try taking some major steps, instead of these half assed little ones, if you are going to criticize others. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Exactly? You are just as stupid as she is then. What steps has she actually taken to reduce her carbon footprint? Has she given up her gas guzzling SUV? (I actually don't know if she has one, but I am willing to bet she does). Has she moved into an eco friendly home with solar panels? Has she ditched her AC in the summer? Has she stopped eating red meat and products made with Palm Oil? I'm betting she scarfing down a bag of Frito Lay as she typed this post. I'm willing to bet her small sacrifices are bringing reusable bags to the grocery store and drinking out of a reusable bottle and not much more. I highly doubt your friend over there is taking any major steps to reduce her carbon footprint but here you are applauding her.
