New travel rules

I need to vent. And yes I understand we are in a pandemic but I just have to vent somewhere.

I feel like I am stuck in New York. I can’t leave and no one can see us. I’m watching friends and family all over traveling and seeing family and we are being treated so differently here.

No one wants to come see us because of our rules here. I can’t leave because I don’t have the “sick” time to quarantine when we get back.

I feel like we are living in the days of prohibition where people are taking secret trips and driving instead of flying and not showing any photos and forcing their kids to lie that they went away.

I just want to escape NY for a couple days because I need a break from this place and I’m stuck in this miserable state. Ughhhhhhhhhhh.

I find that the new travel rules are better than the old ones - I’m fine with a three day quarantine and a test. Not sure why that couldn’t have been the protocol all along?

We are planning an overnight trip soon to Hershey just for some new scenery. We typically travel a lot so this has been a change.

I agree. And what makes it worse is there is no end in site. Coming up on a year now and I am sure it will go for another year or more. So depressing

Just like the survey I have to fill out every morning for my daughter for school. I always think.. are people being honest on this thing when asked if the kid had a sniffle or stomach ache?

Well some good news, since Biden is most likely president soon all states will probably held as prisoners. I won’t feel as lonely knowing no one is living their lives, not just NY. Get ready and start hoarding toilet paper and cleaning supplies again. A trip to my backyard will be my new vacation plans for 2021 I guess.

I’ve traveled 3 times internationally and a few more times domestic all during the past 4 months. I never experienced anyone taking forms or asking people to quarantine.

If you want to travel and go away there are many ways to do so. Don’t believe everything you read in the news.

Ok well my children’s school will not allow them back for 14 days. So I’m stuck.

There are places that you can go to and not be subject to quarantine on the way back in. We have been going back and forth to Bermuda for a few months. Soon the weather will be too cold but once it warms up I would suggest looking into it. The kids are even allowed back to school right away since the CDC has Bermuda as a "No risk" country. You just need to get tested a bunch of times to enter bermuda and while you are there.

We are also planning to go to Colorado for Feb break. I will quarantine for the few days upon returning and not send my children to school. It will be worth it by then.

I can't imagine how much longer they can keep up these restrictions.

Schools can not make the guidelines themselves. NY has new guidelines that only subject people to a prearrival negative covid test, and a 3 day quarantine followed by a negative covid test. You can contact the DOH if you want further clarification but if your children are in public school they have to abide by the CDC, DOH and state guidelines. They are not legally allowed to make up their own guidelines.

I had no idea about Bermuda! I am going to look into that for the spring. I have flight credits and I refuse to lose them

It is now on the No Risk list for the CDC although the NYS website does not reflect this. However if you call NYS and the DOH they will give you the correct info. You can go there without having to quarantine on the way back. It's amazing. We spent a month there over the summer.

I am so confused by the travel rules.

It says anyone coming to NY has to have a negative test min. 3 days before flying in then when they get here they have to quarantine for 3 days and then on the 4th as long as its a negative you can go out! which is fine for people that live out of state.

What I don't get is if I plan on visiting FL for say only 3 or 4 day which I have done to visit family. I basically as soon as I get there go get tested (will my insurance even cover out of state tests??) and hope I get it back in time??? !!!!
that seems crazy to me!

i am over all the rules and hope they will end soon!

If you have left New York to go somewhere, the rules are a little bit different. If you leave the state for 24 hours or more, when you come back you have to take a test and then again on the third day I believe I read?

I feel the same way. I had to cancel a trip to Cape Cod this past weekend because of the new rules.

I feel trapped too.

I get it. Chat Icon

Just like the survey I have to fill out every morning for my daughter for school. I always think.. are people being honest on this thing when asked if the kid had a sniffle or stomach ache?

I used a restroom in Central Park the other day that was in one of the buildings with offices. Before going in we had to sign a form saying we didn't travel within the past 14 days, we didn't have any symptoms and didn't come in contact with anyone with symptoms or Covid. They didn't ask for ID nor did they ask for contact information incase someone in the building came down with Covid. It was pointless.

As for the original post, I hear you. I've been debating going to visit my daughter and her family. But all these restrictions are making me reconsider. And the airline tickets are going up up up! It's depressing.

There is really no way to catch everyone. Can you imagine what the back up would be like at the bridges?
Think of the GW Bridge on any normal day.
Now picture them stopping and questioning people.
It would be a disaster.
The only thing I can think of is tracking you via your EZPass

It’s hard to monitor everything in a car. My husband crosses the GWB frequently for work and has never seen anyone stop anyone.

We went to PA this weekend since it’s still allowed and the weather was beautiful.

It’s crazy that technically you can still go to Kalahari but you can’t go a million other less germy places (we didn’t go there but DH wanted to).

Exactly and they don't want that so I am sure this is all just fear mongering once again.

It is crazy and so many people are not traveling for all these fears. You can't stop live forever and it is a lot of fear mongering over having the power to say you need to do this or that.

If you have left New York to go somewhere, the rules are a little bit different. If you leave the state for 24 hours or more, when you come back you have to take a test and then again on the third day I believe I read?

The rules are the same whether you are a NYS resident or not if you have left the state for over 24 hours. This is from the NYS website:

For any traveler who has traveled outside of New York for more than 24 hours, such traveler must seek testing prior to departure from that state, within 72 hours of departure, prior to arrival in New York.

The traveler must, upon arrival in New York, quarantine according to Department of Health guidelines for a minimum of three days, measured from time of arrival and on day 4 may seek a diagnostic test to exit quarantine. The traveler may exit quarantine upon receipt of the second negative test result.
