Places to live
I haven't traveled in the country that much and I am starting to contemplate where i can move in 7 years when DD2 graduates.
My ideal place would have
-nature (hiking, parks)
-near water (not necessarily large body can be a lake/river)
-culture (museums, music events) and a bit of diversity
-academic area ("people who think", progressive, spiritual and other like minded folks)
-mild to warm climate
Of course affordability and a job would be priority since i would only be 50 then.
Is there such place?

I think a close fit would be Burlington, VT.
I'm unsure what you mean by "a bit a of diversity," and the weather is similar to here, but aside from that, Burlington would have what you're looking for.

Not a warmer climate, but Chicago (and surrounding area) has everything else you are looking for

DH and I are looking to SC, a little bit inland from Hilton Head.
Warmer, near the water, close to larger cities. 20 minutes to Savannah airport.
Pension friendly, it's not taxed up the wazoo like it is here in NY.

Someone I know moved to Mooresville, NC. It is near a lake (Lake Norman) and not far from Charlotte.

I'm in the Triangle in NC (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill) and I really like it. NC, as a state, has had questionable political policies, but Durham and Chapel Hill are quite liberal. There are a lot of universities (UNC, Duke, NC State, other smaller ones), lots of music and art in the area, and 2 hours from the beach and 2 hours from the mountains.
Only thing it doesn't have is the mild summers. I actually don't mind it b/c every where you go, you're blasted with air conditioning. I prefer dealing with the the hotter summer to dealing with the LI winters!

I've thought of the same thing.
Maybe a DC suburb?
Everything you wrote sounds lovely so perhaps in 11 years when my own is in college I'll be in the house next door to you!
I have also considered that I might want to try to move to a red or purple state in a small effort to turn it blue. It certainly wouldn't be my main criteria, but it's occurred to me and something I might keep in mind.

Southern Shores on OBX in North Carolina. It's close enough to the tourist areas such as Nag's Head and Kitty Hawk but doesn't feel touristy at all. This is where I want to retire.
Or San Diego...right by Coranado Island or right outside La Jolla.

in my travels, i love the following places... that mostly fit your list:
* chicago... yes, it's cold, but it really is an amazing place
* almost all of colorado... i mostly know the northern part, around the university in Ft. Collins, but denver is also awesome
* san diego and orange county ca
great variety in climate, terrain, culture

I moved to CO from LI and I absolutely love it here (been here almost 10yrs). The weather is not as bad as everyone thinks. It mostly snows in the mountains and the weather is always great. No humidity and 300 days of sunshine. The population here is growing tremendously and it is getting super expensive.

Burlington is beautiful but too cold. I meant ethnic diversity

I love Chicago but prefer not to go to a similar climate. Also outside of city its too midwest suburban for me
