What did you pay to switch from oil to gas?

I know this question gets asked a lot but I am curious.

A friend told us that since we have a gas line in our home it should be cheaper to convert, I called around for rough estimates and it was MUCH more than anticipated 10-18k Chat Icon

Please share what you paid to convert--if you already had a gas line in home please add that also--thanks SO muchChat Icon

We priced it and it was in the 10K range. It is not cheaper since you have gas in the house really. The gas company will run a line to your house free if the line is less than a certain distance away. All the cost is the new equipment, installation, tank abandonment and new chimney liner if you have one of the old ones.

So having gas in the house is a minimal savings.

Re: What did you pay to switch from oil to gas?

I recently sold a house to a family member. The house had gas in it (gas stove in kitchen), but the kitchen is on the opposite side of the house than the boiler room, and I know that often the gas being piped in isn't enough for a heating system (so the gas line needs to be enlarged).

They were quoted around $10K to convert. Because they have a relatively new oil-fired boiler, they decided to wait awhile.

I would not convert this time of year... it's probably a bit cheaper to do it in the "off season" (spring/summer) than right before winter hits.

But it can be really cost prohibitive if the gas line is not already in the house. Not all areas have gas in the street, and even if they do, I believe National Grid charges by the foot to bring the gas line to your house (it's only free if the gas line is within a certain number of feet from the house... it used to be 100, but not sure if that is still the parameter). I always have clients call National Grid to find out how close they are to a gas main, and get a rough idea of what it would cost to pipe it in. A lot of times the estimates have been astronomical.

So I believe there is a savings if you have gas in the house, but it's not as much as people think. It's not like you just have to buy a gas heating system and that's it.

We don't live on LI but we are going to pay $6k which includes the new gas furnace (the person doing the work suggested 3 furnances and we chose the most expensive because it will be the most efficient and save $ in the long run.) and the installation. We are only doing heat as we have a new electric hot water heater.

NYSEG ran 100 feet of gas line to our house and installed the meter. The contractor will pick it up from there.

Gas is significantly cheaper than oil so I wouldn't say the savings are minimal- it will just take you a couple years to recoup the investment. We spent about $2400 on heating oil last winter and the person we spoke with said it will run us about $800 for the season. Gas prices will be more likely to remain stable in the future and not flutcuate as much as gas.

No, we are in Putnam County. Using a company based near Poughkeepsie.

Re: What did you pay to switch from oil to gas?

We are converting next week and are paying $3,500 to a family friend because we have gas in the house and the necessary equipment. Our burner does not need to be replaced because it is relatively young (7yrs) and can be converted with one part which the plumber called the "gas gun." Additionally, our gas pipe to the house is the appropriate size and the correct location in the house. Our only expenses are the labor, the chimney lining, remove and drain oil tank, and the part to convert the burner. The $3,500 is a redcued rate because he is a friend of the family. We did have other plumbers provide us estimates and they ranged form $4,400 (willco)- over $10,000 (Universe-which was ridiculous). The difference was usually based on all new equipement vs. converting our current set-up.

We paid a little over 7K, which inlcuded the new burner and hot water heater. We did not have a gas line to the house, but it was in the street, so National Grid brought it up to the house for free.

We have gas, not sure what we paid in our old house which was oil.

But I will tell you, for a WHOLE year, with gas heat and a gas stove, I am a SAHM home all day with a 2yo, so our house is at a minimum of 68 degrees in the winter, our total bill is less than $1400 for the year. I think if we did balanced billing it would be $105 a month. (our house is 1700 sq ft ranch)

you already have the line in your house? My last house had a gas dryer so the gas was in the house and we paid to run the line to the kitchen so I can use a gas stove and it cost us $800.

The line to my house was free because I was within 200 feet of the main line. As stare above, the real cost is the equipment ( boiler, water heater, etc).

We paid just under 10k , but there were rebates of about $1200.

We were quoted $16,000 which I see is very high. It is to the gas already. This price included removing our old tank, new hot water heater, stove hook up and gas fireplace.

We had it done 2 weeks ago . We had gas in the house already for stove and dryer . We paid 7800 before 1000 rebate. We got quotes up to 10,000 though.
