My planned c-section delivery, easy peasy

I was due to have my first DD on Sept. 22. At 33w, she was measuring 6lb, set to be a 9lb-er. At 38w, she was still on the same track. At my 38w visit, my doctor did an internal and said she was not at all ready to come yet, and we discussed my options. I had some health concerns, and after the internal it was determined that she may or may not fit through. So I decided to schedule a c-section at 39w,2d. I did want to go into labor on my own, just to feel it, so I was trying everything, all to no avail.

I went into Good Samaritan Hospital at 5:30 am on Sept. 17th, and prepped for the surgery. My doctor wheeled me into the OR at 7:30, and I got my anesthesia. It was one tiny needle in my spine, not painful at all. My DH was invited into the OR after I was put into place and my surgery began. Everyone kept scaring me that you would feel all this tugging and discomfort, but I was so freaking nervous to have a baby, I felt nothing! It was so weird being completely awake and listening to the doctor and nurses talk about where they were going to dinner that night and what music was on the radio. At about 8:10, the doctor told DH to turn his camera on and look over the screen, and take a picture of his baby girl as she comes out of my body! We have some great pictures of that moment and it was amazing to capture it.

Sophia Josephine was born at 8:12am and weighed 8lb,15oz...so close to 9lb! DH took her as soon as he could and showed her to me. I was in shock!! We have one picture that the nurse took and we both look terrified! She swallowed meconium and needed to spend a little extra time getting cleaned up and suctioned, so I didn't see her too much, but I heard her! DH took her to the nursery to get checked out and show her off to our family while I was put back together and went into recovery.

I had a gynecological procedure in April 2011, and my uterus had some scar tissue, which caused me to lose a little too much blood, so I spent about 2 hours in recovery. Also, as the anesthesia wore off my face was so itchy. Like a crack addict I kept saying. Even as I was in the OR, it was bad. Once I got to my room, which I shared with a woman for 2 days of my 5 day stay, they brought my family to me, and everyone told me how beautiful she was, which I obviously already knew
Chat Icon. Around 10, they brought her to me. It was a little difficult to hold her with the IV in my arm.

We stayed in the hospital until Friday. I was up and pacing the maternity ward the next day, as soon as I was cleared to walk around. I only took Motrin after my initial pain meds wore off. It has been an amazing recovery. My ob said that due to her size and my body, there would have been a big chance my labor would have lead to a c-section anyway, so I am 100% glad I made the decision I did. My sweet baby has been a little bit difficult to get used to, but one month in and we have a routine going on. She slept 5 hours straight for four days now!

Everyone tells you how instantly you fall in love with your little one, a feeling that you can't describe. I just want to let all pregnant women know that this doesn't always happen immediately, and to not feel bad if it doesn't. I didn't feel the connection to her, and I don't think she did either. But we are crazy about each other now. I have had some depression, which went from non-stop crying, to crying once a day, and now I'm not crying too much at all. I wanted to say this, I think it is important for everyone to know that it's not just the physical trauma that your body goes through, but emotion as well.

But enough of my rambling, without further ado, here is Sophia Josephine:

congrats!! she is gorgeous!!

i couldnt agree more with the emotional trauma and the lack of instant connection. just so other mommies are aware, for a variety of reasons women who have c-sections are more likely to experience these issues (although it can happen regardless of type of birth). blood loss at the time of delivery can also increase these feelings. it sounds like you are feeling a lot better now, take it one day at a time and enjoy your precious miracle Chat Icon !!
