So someone ran over our yard and into our tree and we know who it is....WWYD

So the other night we went for a walk with the kids, we normally play in our front yard with the kids and the power wheel but decided to go for a walk. Well while we were walking back one of the neighbors on the corner stopped us and said someone had just run up onto our lawn and had hit the small tree we have in the front yard. We come running around the person and there are tire treads through the front yard, branches everywhere and no car....well my husband see's the tire treads come off the driveway and into our neighbors, well my husband walks over and asks..."Hey did you guys see anything..." they get quite and say No. My husband is walking away and see's branches all over their drive way and stuck up in the wheel well. He just left, had that been me I would have called the police and reported it. What would you have done?

I wouldn't have called the police... I think you just moved into the neighborhood, right? Calling the police on someone seems like a good way to become persona non grata in the neighborhood. If it were me, I would want to try to get to know everyone before I threw down the gauntlet, you know? And what would calling the police really accomplish at this point, other than to escalate the situation.

I know it's scary that you and the kids could've been in the yard - thankfully, you weren't.

If it's really bothering you, why not go over there and say something like "I don't mean to accuse you, but we noticed the tire tracks and leaves in your wheel wells... did one of you have an accident and drive up onto our lawn?" You can try to find out how it happened, and if you have any damage, I think you could ask them to pay for it. But if it's just a few branches off your tree, I'd let it go, assuming it was a one-time, fluke accident.

That's just me, though. I know different people could handle it differently. I also think it depends on your neighbors and how they've been so far. Do they seem reckless, disruptive, etc? Are you afraid this could happen again (do you suspect your neighbor was drunk, do they have a teenager that is an unsafe driver)? If it could be an ongoing problem or you don't feel safe living next door, then that's another story.

Look to see if there is any damage on their car that would come from hitting a tree

Called the police, I don't care if I just moved in or not, I'm calling the police so that a report can be written.

I'd also be taking pictures of everything AND their car in their driveway.

Who gives a crap if you just moved in!?!?!? That was very bad advice! The cops should should have been called immediately , god forbid you or your children were standing there. They could have been covering up DUI otherwise why would they lie?

Wow! I guess I touched a nerve, but I totally didn't mean to.

The question was "What would YOU do" so I was simply stating what I would have done. As I said in my original post, I don't know all of the facts about her neighbors or the incident. So it wasn't really intended to be advice on what to do in the moment. From her original post, it seemed the incident had already occurred and her DH decided not to call the police, although she would have preferred to.

But as I said - if it were ME, and I just moved into a neighborhood and didn't really know anyone, I would not have called the police immediately, without knowing the facts. I think it is relevant that she is new to the neighborhood because she may not know everything about the neighbors and their situation. And she is going to have to continue living next door to them and everyone else in that neighborhood. Of course, if the neighbors create an ongoing problem and are a threat to safety, then action should be taken. But calling the police would be MY last resort. I think it's in everyone's interest to try to work things out privately first, when there is a problem to be resolved. Again, just speaking for me.

Should the neighbors have lied, no, but I would not jump to the conclusion that they were covering up a DUI. It could be a lot of things... maybe they were just mortified.

I would ask the neighbors if they had any idea & if not, do they think I should call the police.

Or just call the police .It sounds like it's not going to take a detective to figure out that their car hit your property. If they determine it was the neighbors, I'll ask them to pay for the damages or we can go through insurance.

It's not like you accused the neighbors & if the police determine it was them, that's their problem.

Jeez, what cowards. I would have confronted them and then if they were morons about it, I would call the police.

Re: So someone ran over our yard and into our tree and we know who it is....WWYD

I'm clearly (from my other post) more interested in my children's well being and the security of my property than what the neighbor's think. I would have definitely called the police. What kind of person does that? To a new neighbor? What is up with people? Granted, they probably made sure the kids weren't around, but GFB next time someone is out to be a jack*ss a child gets "in the way" of their little prank. JMO. And yes, coward would be my description of the other neighbor's who got quiet and absolutely idiotic and immature would be that of the driver. If I saw someone do that to even the neighbor on my block who is obnoxious to us, I would so say something... especially if there are kids, but regardless you don't do that to someone else's property.

I would absolutely call the police and let them deal with it. What rotten cowards. I'm sorry you have neighbors like this.

More importantly, thank GOD you all were not in the yard!! Glad you're all okay!

I would also consider a fence. Chat Icon

Re: So someone ran over our yard and into our tree and we know who it is....WWYD

Well, for starters, I wouldn't worry about being "persona-non-grata" for calling the police - I would hope the neighbor that ripped up your front lawn and destroyed your tree and then drove away would earn that title before you! If your neighbors expect you to just do nothing and walk away and forgive and forget damage to your property then, who needs these people!

So what would I do - it would depend on the damage. If it was going to cost me any $$ or time at all I would def. do SOMETHING. I would have asked around if anyone saw anything and, then, if I didn't have a confession - I would call the police. I wouldn't point fingers I would just tell them what happened and let them do their job. Why should you have to suck up damage to your property NO WAY!

I agree! And God forbid you and your child were playing in the yard when it happened! Chat Icon Chat Icon It sounds like your neighbors were embarrassed and/or didn't want to take responsibility for the damage, but any kind of person with a conscience would know that the right thing to do would be to admit to the accident, apologize, and offer to pay for any damage. At this point I don't see how you could build any type of real neighborly friendship with them anyway, since they obviously blatantly lied to you about destroying your property.

Amen to that! Heads would roll if that were me. That is absolutely unacceptable and it is not something to just brush under the rug.
