Can you please explain piggybacking Tylenol and Motrin?

Do you just alternate every six hours? Why do you alternate - do they do different things?

DS has already woken up hysterically crying twice tonight - it just took me half hour to get him back down - I think it's going to be a looong night!

Most people alternate when the baby has a high fever....When DS had a fever of 102, I just gave him Motrin every 6-8 hours...

i don't know if this is what you mean or not. My dr. said you can give tylenol and then two hours give the motrin. Two hours after that give the tylenol. Repeat as needed. They have two different ingredients in them. So, you will not be giving too much.

Really? Every two hours? That seems like so much! He's now woken up three times!

This is from Dr. Sear's website....

# Ibuprofen usually starts taking effect within 30 minutes and should last at least six hours. If it wears-off too soon, then use a dose of Acetaminophen.
# For very high or stubborn fevers, alternate between Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen every three hours (i.e., give a dose of Acetaminophen then three hours later give Ibuprofen then three hours later Acetaminophen, ect.) These two medications are safe to use together like this.
# Compared with Acetaminophen (Tylenol), Ibuprofen works a little faster, lasts a little longer, and seems to bring a fever down farther.

How high is his temp? Does he still have the rash? Usually there is a high fever before the rash with roseola...

Re: Can you please explain piggybacking Tylenol and Motrin?

Thanks for the info. The highest I saw his temp was 102.1 so nothing crazy high. The last time I went in to him he actually felt cool. I think what's bothering him now is his tummy - tomorrow will be FOUR DAYS since he's poopedChat Icon so we gave him milk of magnesia two times today - nothing has happened as of yet but he's tooting a lot so I think his tummy hurts. :(

Thanks, ladies.

He had a jar of prunes today. I'm going to have to check with his GI tmrw about the Milk of Mag - I know the dosage isn't enough for him based on his weight now.

Old post - Piggybacking Schedule

As always - check with your ped.

Also I'm sure you are aware but in case you aren't - there is a HUGE difference between concentrated infant dose & child dose. ALWAYS, ALWAYS tell your ped which one you have because you can overdose an infant if they think you have the children's dose.

For belly pain, rub his belly to his left of his belly button & massage it.

The one thing that gets DS to go almost every time is an apple juice/pear juice combo. I put an ounce of each in a cup with 2 oz of water and within a few hours we have poop...And a lot of it!

Re: Can you please explain piggybacking Tylenol and Motrin?

you can give tylenol and motrin together they are different drugs and do different things

tylenol is given every 4 hours
motrin is every 6 hour

so what you can do is
give tylenol check temp in 2 hours if still high give motrin 2hours later you can give more tylenol the then 4 hours later you can give tylenol and motrin and so on
