washing vegetables with soap???
I was at my friend's house yesterday and she was making us a salad. She squirted dish soap on the cucumber, lathered, then rinsed it off. Is this what I'm supposed to be doing?? I just rinse in cold water--maybe that isn't doing anything to the pesticides?

Re: washing vegetables with soap???
The only thing I can think of is that maybe it's a vegetable wash? You can buy themin the health food store and supposedly it removes pesticides better than water alone. My ILs use it, keep it next to the sink, and the bottle does look like a dish soap bottle.

Re: washing vegetables with soap???
It was dish soap--and the weird thing is that, when we discussed it, she thought I was strange for not using soap.

Re: washing vegetables with soap???
I have a foaming soap dispenser and I will wash cucumbers, tomatoes and apples with a bit.
Everything else is usually just water.

Re: washing vegetables with soap???
I admit.......I've done this, especially in the summertime.
But I do it on skinned vegetables and fruits......like cucumbers, apples, oranges, etc.
As long as they are rinsed off good, there is no harm in doing so.
Vinegar and water spray works just as good also.

Re: washing vegetables with soap???
You are not supposed to do this. My MIL did this once with berries and now I am hesitant to eat foods at her house that she might have washed.
Grant it, Dawn isn't the worst thing to ingest but if it has antibacterial in it, it can be. The only thing you are supposed to wash food with is a certified fruit and veggie wash.

Re: washing vegetables with soap???
I peel my cucumbers.
I have never ever used soap nor ever will use soap to clean veggies and fruits. Water and a paper towel to dry off is enough for me.

Re: washing vegetables with soap???
I can understand doing that if you peel the vegetables afterwards but otherwise personally I just wash them in water.
I can't imagine it being healthy to wash them (and then eat them) using dishwashing soap.

Re: washing vegetables with soap???
My MIL washes all her fruits and veggies that have a skin that we will eat with vegetable wash. The only one she doesn't do is lettuce. For thanksgiving I looked over and saw the stringbeans a in bowl of sudsy water and thought she lost her mind so I asked if she really just used soap and then she showed me what she used.
