making a man's t-shirt into a woman's

I have been collecting a lot of t-shirts from various races. I don't wear them at all b/c they are not fitted. But they are all technical material (takes sweat away).

Can I turn them inside out and use a fitted shirt that I have for a pattern?

Erica someone once told me recently that you can take all your tshirts from races or whatever and have them made into a quilt or blanket. I have a bunch as well and I think I may look into that.

you would need to put a backing on a tshirt for a quilt, or else they'll sag.

have you tried looking at the "generation t" ?

there are two books that give you ideas on how to turn a t-shirt that doesn't fit into something cool to wear

rosemarie - they are not sentimental - I would really love to wear them running, but I prefer fitted shirts.

libby - what is generation t - a book or website?

on a side note - i brought the shirts to my mom (she teaches quilting) and she says she has heard of people cutting down t-shirts - so there is hope - maybe I can get her to do it! Chat Icon

I think the main concern would be using the right stitching on your sewing machine. The newer home machines have settings (and perhaps special needles and attachments) designed to sew knits with an appropriate stitch so it stretches. There are several sites talking about options if you search but you have to slog through them - some suggest adding ribbons, buttons, etc. This was one interesting option that would give you a more fitted look - you can also stich in the sides some for a more fitted look: Darts: Sew 2 matching horizontal darts up the front in the waist area (starting at the bust & ending about 2 inches below the waist). Make a pleat where they start & stop. Mirror the pleat on the other dart. You can also do this in the back if the shirt is extra wide.

Karen, let's not get crazy, sewing darts...

I have one T that is pretty simple - I'm going to try one using that as a simple pattern - crossing my fingers!
