A list of preschool questions I compiled -

Hope some of you can find this helpful. I found myself dumbfounded when I wanted to start looking for a school for Ryan.

So, I compiled a list of questions to ask when calling preschools for preliminary information. You'll notice I have a few food allergy related questions. That is because Ryan has a peanut and egg allergy. Feel free to leave it out! Chat Icon

Preschool questions

Name, Address, Phone number of preschool:

Do you have a website?

Are you a daycare center or a preschool?

Is there are a waiting list?

Is there an admissions test?

Are you state licensed?

How long has the school been in existence?

What experience/certification do the teachers have?

What are your hours?

What are your pickup/drop off procedures?

Cost/payment options?

How did you get involved in early childhood education?

What is the staff turnover rate?

What is your policy on diapers and/or potty training?

What is the student to teacher ration for 2-3 year olds? And 3-4 year olds?

Is a curriculum followed for Early childhood Education? (Ex:Creative curriculum, high scope, etc.)

How do chart growth and progress?

Are there volunteer opportunities for the parents?

Is there day-to-day or weekly communication between home and school?

Is there a daily routine? What is it?

How is discipline handled?

Is there a nurse on premises?

What is your food allergy procedure, more specifically peanuts?

Are any staff members trained in administering an Epi Pen?

What is the policy for taking care of sick or injured children?

What is the vacation and holiday schedule?

Does the school have an outdoor space and how often is it used?

Questions to ask yourself:

Are the children safe, busy, and happy?

Does the school have a lively, creative order to it?

Are the rooms decorated with teacher art or children's art? (Children's art decorating the room is a sign the teachers value what the children create.

Do the teachers seem to like what they are doing?

NAEYC accreditation standards say there should be one adult for every six 2 to 3 year-olds in a classroom, and one adult for every ten 3- to 4-year-olds.

If the preschool you're considering promises to have your child computer literate or reading in several months, walk right out the door. There is absolutely no evidence that "early enrichment" helps kids this age do any better later on.

Imaginary play is as important to preschoolers as the air they breathe: Are they working at a sand table? Playing with blocks? Mesmerized by a story? Climbing on a jungle gym? Building a fort? Parading about in dress-up clothes? Fooling around with puppets? Activities like these are developmentally appropriate and can foster a lifelong love of learning.

I just went to a preschool open house and found that some of the 2 year old programs require them to be potty trained and will not change the child in case of an accident. The parent will be called.

I added this question to the list:

What is your policy on diapers and/or potty training?
