Re: 5years later, name change?

I think you have to just go down to Social Security with your marriage certificate....if you give them a call they can dierct you.

Good luck!

Re: 5years later, name change?

thats it? Is that just the first step? Then I have to do the liscense, c-cards, passport, ect.?
Also, does anyone know the difference of hyphenating and just adding his name?

Re: 5years later, name change?

it doesn't matter if you do it 5 days after you get married or 5 years, its the same process.

you start with Social security or DMV.

just fill out the name change forms and put how you want your name to appear.

i'd do the passport last cause you have to send original documents to change your name with that.

call all your credit cards, some of them might even do the name change on the phone, others might require you to fax information while others might want you to send it in the mail.

Re: 5years later, name change?

I did my SS and DMV on the same day. It took a while-lines are LONG!!

Then after that you call your credit cards, cell phone, utilities, etc.

Make sure you have a few photocopies of your marriage license, I needed to submit it at the bank, for utilities, and mortgage.

I'm still waiting to get everything with my new name on it-all accounts are updated with the new name, they just haven't sent a new card yet.

ALSO-make sure you fill out and apply for a new passport!! This is my next big task.

Re: 5years later, name change?

I have done everything. I did DMV 1st. Go early in the AM with your marriage certificate, avoid the lines. Same for SS. Your bank should be quick. For your passport you just mail your current passport, your marriage certificate (original) & a form you get at the post office. If your passport is less then a year old it's free, if not then it's a small fee.

All places will give you the option to hyphenate. I don't know how long the names are but I would suggest that.
