Slomins & Triple Play Optimum Customers

We have the Slomins alarm system and the triple play through Optimum. So - our phone and modem are connected through the same line. If the cable modem goes down, the phone line goes down and this will cause the alarm to go off.

This doesnt happen often, maybe every couple of months, but it has ALWAYS happened in the middle of the night. So imagine being woken up in the middle of the night with your house alarm going off. It even happened one time when DH was out of town and I freaked.

Has this happnened to anyone else?

We were thinking of switching to a regular landline phone through Verizon but it would be extra $ and with a baby on the way its not an option right now.

Isn't there a battery backup? We got an 8 hour battery automatically with our FiOS setup. If the power goes out, the phone will work for another 8 hours.

If you don't have one, you should be able to just get a UPS from BestBuy, Staples, etc, and plug the modem into the UPS to give you plenty of backup power. A full-size UPS should last for a day or more.

I wonder if the battery backup would work? The phone isnt going out because we lose power really - its because our cable modem is going down for some reason.

Re: Slomins & Triple Play Optimum Customers

That's different, then...... not sure why the modem would go down if the power is OK. Defective modem, perhaps?

Re: Slomins & Triple Play Optimum Customers

You should get a cellphone wireless transmitter from the alarm company.

It costs another $10 a month but it will wirelessly call the central station if you have a breakin.

So if your primary phone goes out, it should not trigger your alarm.

I haven't had a false alarm yet in my two plus years of having the security system (with Cablevision phone).

uh-oh we were just assured that this was NO longer a problem with our alarm company (not slomins) - our phone line goes out (Not the power) but the phone itself will not have a dial tone for a few seconds to a 1-2 minutes every so often. We were assured that it wouldn't trigger our alarm. Please let me know what you end up doing - we didn't want to get a land line either - as the basic landline with taxes etc (no including the PER call) will run between 24-26$ a month (11.95 + all taxes and surcharges).

Our first step, which is different than your situation, is going to be to call Optimum and see if maybe our modem needs to be replaced.

Re: Slomins & Triple Play Optimum Customers

this is so funny because it has happened to us twice in the past month at 1am and then 330am just wednesday night. i get so freaked out. i called cablevision and they came to check the line yesterday. here's what we found out:

apparently the alarm is set up to go off if our phone lines are cut. when optimum reboots the system (usually at night) the alarm thinks the phone line is cut and starts to beep. all you have to do, since anyone with optimum does not have a land line that someone could cut anyway, is call the alarm company and get the code to deprogram your alarm for land line cutting. then the problem should never happen again. But isn't your cable wire technically your "land line". Cutting that cable will disconnect your alarm from the monitoring station, which is what the alarm is supposed to detect.

slomins said I can deactivate the system so the alarm does not go off if the phone lines/modem go down. But I dont want to do that bc GOD FORBID someone actually does cut the phone line, the alarm will not go off.

from what i understand, your telephone is through the internet service not a physical land line on the outside that someone can cut. if they cut your modem they are already in your house and the alarm would have gone off by them getting inside. if the internet is down then so is your phone service therefore central station will not be aware anyway. this is more of a feature for people with verizon because they actually have a land line someone can cut from the outside. if you disable it, each time optimum reboots you won't have that beeping in the middle of the night but central station is still available because your phone is actually working shortly after the reboot. its notifying you that someone is cutting your phone line but you have no physical phone line. am i making sense?

ITA they install something in the attic that transmits the signal wirelessly. This is what we have.

But your internet service, television, and phone are all going through a physical wire from your house to the poles at the street. They are usually parallel to the phone wires. As far as physically cutting wires, there's no difference between cutting your cable/internet/phone wire as a plain telephone wire.

This makes sense. This avoids the whole physical wire issue.
