Why? I wouldn't tip him. He's doing his JOB! It's his JOB to clean and service the oil burner.

I just think tipping has gotten WAY out of hand in general.

I don't tip our guy. I already pay to have the extra part of the service so no tip from us.

Re: Are you supposed to tip the guy that services your oil burner

We are big on tipping but have never tipped the oil burner guy.
I am paying a HUGE premium for oil so that it includes this contract- no need to pay any more.

Re: Are you supposed to tip the guy that services your oil burner

in respects to my father he works hard and he deserves a tip too. If you go to the diner and have dinner you tip your waiter and pay for your food then it the same thing with the fuel and fixing you oil burner. Say if you didnt have that contact and something broke you will be pay alot of money to fix that.. just keep in mind that everybody works hard not just waiters.

A waiter is paid less than minimum wage because they are counting on tips. An oil burner repair man is paid to do his job. His salary is not reduced with the expectation of receiving tips. Everybody who works hard does not deserve a tip. People are paid to do their jobs.

ITA- I work hard to do my job too- nobody tips me.
And in terms of that oil burner contract- we ARE paying for it. We are paying TOP DOLLAR for our oil so that it includes that contract. It's not free.
Compare the price per gallon of COD oil (with no service contract) versus the price per gallon at these companies that give you a so called "free" contract- and you will see this contract is not free at all!

Re: Are you supposed to tip the guy that services your oil burner

I tipped him because I just felt better tipping than NOT tipping
thanks to everyone who answered my post
I gave him $10 and I have to say he seemed a bit shocked but very appreciative

Re: Are you supposed to tip the guy that services your oil burner

I used to tip all the time, until I had a puff back in my house last year and the head of the oil comapny was in my basement and told me to NEVER tip them, they are not supposed to be tipped and they make a salary. I was pretty annoyed after they were here month after month telling me my oil burner was fine when it was not and I had the fire dept in my house etc. I will never tip them again. Sorry for the mini vent....

I always tip them. They are providing a service. Also, when I call them they are at my house in 20 minutes. It is definitely worth the $10.
