Here is my birth story:

On May 3rd, I went to the hospital in early labor and was sent home as many of you know. I then had contractions for about a six days and I was still 2cm and 60% effaced, same as May 3rd.

I had a doctors appointment on May 9th and went in for a non stress test and exam. The non stress test revealed that Gracie's heart rate was fine, but I was still having contractions that were 3-5 minutes apart. The doctor said that this does not look good because he felt there is a reason why she is not coming out. He basically told us that if I came in to be induced that I would have an 95% chance of a c-section. Knowing that I did not want a c-section he said that we could wait another 3-4 days to see if she cam on her own, but he felt it was highly doubtful that she would. Since she was not in danger, he gave us this option. Well we stayed at DH's moms that night and decided to talk there. We decided to go in for the induction on Wed. May 10th because I was in such pain with all of the contractions.

We went in for the induction Wed. morning. After 4+ hours of Pitocin, there was still no change in my cervix or my effacement. Doctor said that we should proceed with the c-section. He also said the if Pitocin did not do anything there is a definite reason why she is not coming out. I was scared but very excited. My doctor was AMAZING and the surgical team talked me through EVERYTHING and they were reassuring me the whole time. Before The c-section The doctor asked me if I wanted music because he likes to have music on while he is operating. He asked if I liked U2, and I said they were one of my favorite bands. He had every U2 album on his Ipod and he plugged it into the speakers. I felt awesome. Then I got my spinal/epidural and that went well.

The c-section was WAY better than I expected it to be and DH even saw Chat Icon being born! They let me hold her while they stitched me up and DH & I were both crying tears of joy. The reason why she could not come on her own was that her umbilical cord was wrapped around her shoulders, acting like a sling. Therefore, every time she would descend into my pelvis, the "sling" would pull her up again. The doctor said that even if I had waited a few days, it would have been a c-section anyway.

The staff at NSUH Manhasset were absolutely amazing. My OB/GYN (Dr. David Bergman) was INCREDIBLE!!!!! I had no issues with pain meds, doctors, nurses, etc. Everyone was nicer than the next person. I shared a room with a another mommy and she was the sweetest person, too. My incision is healing nicely and I was walking around day 2. I feel great and I am very surprised by that. I thought The recovery from a c-section would be a nightmare, but it is not.
Ladies, thank you for all of your support the past nine months, I could not have made it without all of you. See you all on the parenting board! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
