Retelling in first grade

I'm getting observed next week and would like to do some kind of retelling lesson. I'm not sure if I should keep it simple by doing beginning, middle, and end, or if I should go into story elements. Does anyone have any suggestions or any lessons they did in the past that worked for them? TIA

Re: Retelling in first grade

our reading teacher made us these cool "story ropes" that help the kids retell stories by touching each part of the rope. Its hard to explain but she got wooden cut outs of a house, a man, and a boot and some beads. The house was on the top of the rope, you touch and a tell the setting, next was the man, you touch it and tell the characters, next was the boot, and you say some thing that "kicks off the events" Then each bead is one event from the story, Oh and then at the end of the rope there is a knot, and it represents how the story "ties up" at the end. The kids absolutely LOVE using it, it really helps them remember. If you want tomorrow I will take a picture of it so you can see it.

Re: Retelling in first grade

For the beginning/middle/end you can use foldables

Take contstruction paper & fold 3 flaps & write, beginning/middle/end & then inside they can draw a picture or write.

Sounds almost like this product (from a speech-language company): story grammar marker
