2 yr old nap issues

For the past 2 weeks my DD dropped her 2nd nap. She was late to drop to one nap but she used to sleep a total of at least 3 hours. Now that she is down to 1 nap, she only sleeps 1 hour total. She is beyond exhausted for the rest of the day, no matter if I make it early like 10-11 or 11-12 or 12-1.

Is this normal to only sleep 10-11 hours at night and 1 hour during the day and just 2 years old? Chat Icon

Re: 2 yr old nap issues

Some 2-yrs don't nap at all so it's def. "normal". But, since she still seems tired after an hour, maybe she'll start extending the nap after she adjusts to only having one. If she doesn't, can you just give her another hour of down time after nap, like a couple of shows?

Re: 2 yr old nap issues

My 2yr old dropped her second nap when she was 1! I am so jealous.

DD generally sleeps 11 hours a night and takes a 2 hour nap in the afternoon. Lately she's been skipping that too.

Well the 2 naps were nice but they totalled the same as most DC's 1 nap. I did like the break between the day.

She absolutely will not go back down for a second one and is sometimes up from 1130 until 730. That is a loong stretch for her and she is unbelievably cranky!

Re: 2 yr old nap issues

What time are you napping her?

You should try to push to 12:30/1PM or so if you're not already.

Re: 2 yr old nap issues

Does she wake up crying from her nap? If she isn't I would maybe put a toy or two in the crib so when she wakes up she is still relaxing a little and might get a little more rest not necessarily sleep.

Re: 2 yr old nap issues

She is sooo tired early in the day, she would never make it until 1230/1. The daycare she is going to in a few weeks has that schedule and I don't know how she will adjust since by 1030/11 her eyes are closing.

When she wakes up she is crying hard, and she throws everything out of the crib (her way of saying I'm done Chat Icon ). So I try a paci or a toy but she just chucks them out..

Re: 2 yr old nap issues

I gradually made his early nap later. I would increase by 20 minutes every few days/week.

Now he's napping after lunch (usually around 1ish) and for 2-2.5 hours

That's when he's home

When he's at the sitter, he usually only naps for about an 1-1.5 hours.

Why don't you try making the nap later gradually?

I am sort of in the same situation. My boys are 20 months. They wake around 7 but usually hang out in their cribs until 8. Then they are READY for a nap at 10:30 and will usually sleep until 12:30...BUT they go to sleep at 6:45 most nights. What time does she go to bed?

Re: 2 yr old nap issues

we worked with a sleep trainer who helped with an entire schedule and here is the scoop..keeping on the exact same schedule each day, i have zero probs now and man, mine was a mess a year ago at this time...

DD=up at 6, and stays in until 630 ...
lunch 1130
nap always at 1230 and up at 2-230
bed 7pm.

It takes an adjustment but wow, it worked...we had to let her cry at bit to get used to naps and when the 2 naps dropped, ouchy, it was the roughest...sleep trainer told me that is the HARDEST transition...we kept her awake and busy and within say 2-3 weeks, she was like a clock....and my life went sane again, lol

Re: 2 yr old nap issues

DS is 2 and has been down to 1 nap a day since 18 months.

He usually goes down for his nap between 12:30 and 1:30 depending on how our day is going.

He will nap anywhere between 1 hour and 3 hours. Doesn't matter on how active he is or what we have done that day.

He is always in bed by 7:30 and usually wakes between 7 and 7:30.

I think you need to find a nap time that works for you and let her adjust. It may take more than a week for her to fully adjust.

Thanks! How do you keep her busy until 1230? I feel like after being up since 630 she is done with activities (and me too lol) by 1030....Chat Icon

Re: 2 yr old nap issues

ds gets up between 5 am and 7 am. Usually around 6 though. Goes for nap b/t 12 and 1at home and at 12 at school. Will nap for 1 hour at home or 2 hours at school and then goes down for night b/t 7:30/8. I schedule our day that we have something to do every 15 -30 minutes or so but we do have a lot of out of the house time. If we didn't I think I would go crazy :)

DS is 18 months and has been having trouble the past 3 weeks napping. He used to nap an average of 1 1/2 hours usually from 11 to 12:30 ish...He has been napping for about 40 minutes and is totally exhausted. He has been going to bed between 6 ad 6:30pm
I've been trying to somehow retrain him everyday. I've been reading the toddler chapter of Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child. Today was the 1st successful nap we've had for weeks, No explanation for this so my advice is to move your child's bedtime a little earlier to compensate for the loss of nap.

One of my strategies was to move the nap to 12 by moving the nap everyday 10 minutes later. You can try that, he was able to make it until 11:25 one day and then regressed again, maybe if you increased it by 5 minutes everyday it would work....Once we are back on track again with just taking a solid nap withpout a major meltdown I will try to move the nap to a later time too....

Re: 2 yr old nap issues

I am having the same situation with my DD...and almost all daycares the nap starts at 12:30-1. But DD goes down now at 10:30. Today I pushed it to 11- she was a demon. There is no way we can make it until 1.
When do you give DD lunch? I give lunch when she wakes from her nap. I guess now I have to gradually start the process of giving lunch BEFORE nap time.
For everyone doing the transition...will you all be doing the same? What time do you do lunch?

Re: 2 yr old nap issues

it's an adjustment. We moved jacen to 1 nap a while ago for a few reasons, but it also seemed like he was slowly ready himself.

But it took time. He's one kid where he needs a lot of sleep. So for a few weeks it was a battle trying to keep him up. We slowly moved his nap later and later, but i often found that during that time he couldn't be in the car. If he was in the car, he'd fall asleep. Chat Icon Chat Icon

But she'll get used to it. It will take some time though. Just make sure you put her to bed earlier than her normal bedtime in the mean time until she adjusts. Chat Icon
