Advice needed--What kind of shower did you have if you live far away from family?

My sister lives in CA and is due in February. I really want to have a shower for her, but I know she won't be back to NY before she has the baby. She and her DH are planning to move back to NY in April. Should I wait until she moves back to have a Welcome Baby/Baby Shower party? Would that be odd or tacky? She also doesn't have a lot or room where she is now so I don't know about sending too many gifts out there. Hopefully close family and friends will send her the basics to get her through the first 2 months and then we can do something for her later. Does that sound good? Any other ideas or thoughts are welcome!!

Your idea sounds good except she'll probably need some things before April. We live in Chicago and our family/friends are all in NY. We had a couples shower (it was more like a party) in NY at my brother's house and asked everyone to ship their gifts. It worked out great.

I flew back for my shower at 30 weeks. Physically, I was able to fly with no problems. But trying to get the gifts back was a major PITA. Most people gave small gifts (lots of clothing) because they knew I'd be flying them back but there was a lot of it!

Since she's moving back to NY, I would wait and have a baby welcoming party. It's not tacky at all. That way, everyone can welcome them back to NY and see the baby when he/she is not so fresh but still little.

For my first, I flew to where my family lives (MI) and we had my shower there. It several months before I was due because I couldn't fly past a certain time.
