Antibody testing
*if* I decide to get this Covid vaccine I want to get tested for antibodies first. Just because I’ve potentially been exposed a handful of times and I’m around a lot of people. I’ve had allergies and what not that could have been Covid symptoms, probably not....but you never know
So my question is, is antibody testing free? Can you go to any walk in clinic for it?

I think your insurance would pay for it but check with them first.
Dh had it done on his routine physical blood work.
He didn't ask for it, it was just on the script

Antibody testing
If you're not in a big rush you can donate blood. Last time I donated at NY Blood Center and got a letter within a few weeks saying they'd tested for antibodies and I was negative. There's still a big shortage going on.

Antibody testing
I don't know if it is free, but your doctor will do it. They did mine as part of my routine bloodwork with my physical. I would think you would just have to pay your normal copay for a visit.

Antibody testing
It goes through insurance so there is a copay involved usually. My company has a company come in and do covid and antibody testing every other week so I’m planning on going at the end of the month to see if the vaccine worked

Nothing is free. They are billing your insurance. These urgent care places are owned by corporations, I can guarantee you they aren't doing any tests or lab work for free.

I doubt you have antibodies. I tested positive for covid in January. Had a very mild case and no antibodies. I don’t know one person that didn’t test positive for covid and then subsequently tested positive for antibodies. Don’t even bother.

That's true too. Plus even if you do have antibodies, they only last so long. If you decide to get the vaccine, they still tell you to get it even if you had covid already

FYI the antibody test will not tell you if the vaccine worked. A vaccinated person is very likely to get a negative result from a serology test, even if the vaccine was successful and protective. That’s because different serology tests detect antibodies to different parts of the virus.

Antibody testing
I got tested for antibodies twice. The first time I went to a walk in clinic and the second time, my regular doctor included it with my routine blood work script.
So far I have not received a bill for either. 1st was in June and 2nd was in February, and both test came back positive for antibodies. I had covid at the end of last april.

Nothing is free. They are billing your insurance. These urgent care places are owned by corporations, I can guarantee you they aren't doing any tests or lab work for free.
What I mean is that I pay nothing out of pocket. No co-pay and I was never sent a bill in the mail from them, nor the insurance company.

I cannot get the vaccine until at least July so I would feel a lot better knowing I have antibodies to "hold me over" until I can be vaccinated this summer.

Unless you were treated with plasma - you can get the vaccine after a Covid diagnosis, many choose not to though as they have antibodies.

The short story is that I started a new thyroid med a month ago so my endo wants me to wait a bit on the vaccine otherwise I'd get it sooner.

No, we had Covid for sure. My husband, son, one of my daughters and myself all tested positive. My son and husband were sicker than we were, they both have antibodies. My daughter and I don't. There is no way it was a false positive given our situation.

I know quite a few people now in the same boat as me who tested positive for covid and negative for antibodies and our doctor told us it's quite common.
Also, antibodies are only one type of immunity and the way the covid antibody test is done is very limited so just because you test negative for antibodies doesn't really mean anything. You should speak to your doctor about it before getting worried about whether or not you have antibodies.

I've heard of people who were confirmed positive not having antibodies, and those who thought they never had Covid (earlier on before testing was so widely available) had antibodies.

Prior to getting the vaccine my primary doc tested me for antibodies. I recently went again and asked to be tested for antibodies now that I’m fully vaccinated. He told me not to bother and looked at me as if it was silly to even be asking for it.
