Why are people still complaining about masks????? Put your big girl panties on and shut up about it, this is life now, at least for next 1 -2 years , if not forever. Adapt, get used to it. And if I'm wrong , and it magically goes away like all the Trump supporters think, I will gladly say I'm wrong. And don't bother attacking me, I'm on this board over a decade , and I won't respond to the "mean girls'.

People may not align with the views of others, but there is no need to attack them on a personal level and say “you put out enough info for us to do that.” No. Just no.

You seem to forget that it got personal because you repeatedly attacked every parent on here for not thinking twice before having kids. Telling us that the possibility of a global pandemic and schools closing down was something we all should have thought about before conceiving. On multiple threads (obviously titled for parents) you were triggered and responded as if we have no right to come here and vent about our kids. We have no right to complain about what a struggle it has been to get our kids to do their schoolwork on top of all the other stuff we were already struggling with.

All we did was point out that you have come here for YEARS to vent and ask for advice and no one was ever as awful to you (before this), as you are to us on a daily basis (when we very easily could have been). We can sense the tone in a post and knew several times that you were struggling with things in addition to the arguments with your BF. We nicely pointed out some things that were off about him. You've been nasty for years, but I guess attacking us when we were already down, made you feel better. That's why it got personal and we no longer felt the need to pacify you. You keep acting like you have no idea where this is coming from, but you're snarky, mean, and a hypocrite.

jlm2008 - I'm sorry your post is being quoted with hers. We're not attacking her because of her views on masks. We're pointing out the hypocrisy in her posting anecdotal evidence, when she repeatedly attacks others on here for doing the same. FTR I'm not anti-mask, I don't love them, or even like them, but I wear them when required. I just can't stand her repeatedly posting that we (selfish Americans) are the only country in the whole world that refuse to wear masks, when people in other countries are doing the same. There are entire 1st world nations that don't mandate them. But she has "friends" that agree with her, so I guess I'm wrong. Chat Icon

I didn't follow the whole thread so I'm not sure what klingklang has said already but I want to address the cultural aspect of this.

The issue with those anecdotes is that LI is NOT the United States. There are parts of the country, usually rural or semi rural areas but not always, where there is so much rebellion against wearing masks.

31 states STILL do not require them.

Southern states are (for the most part) pushing ahead with reopening despite rapidly rising numbers.

Individualism is very inherent in American culture vs. a more collectivist identity that you see in many other places. Pick yourself up by the bootstraps, I got mine screw everyone else, I only give a shit about myself.

OF COURSE not all Americans are like that. And I think things are (overall) getting better. But in certain areas, among certain groups, that's the dynamic you see and hear.

I think it's worth acknowledging this cultural flaw because we can't make it better if we don't say it out loud.

LI is in the United States. There are plenty of areas in the South that are wearing their masks. Anecdotal evidence from klingklang and her superior friends all over the world is irrelevant. Yes, the USA is an individualistic country, but it is not considered the most individualistic country and Germany is right up there next to the USA in terms of being considered "individualistic".

Americans complain about wearing masks, but a lot of us still wear them. We're allowed to complain about it & we're allowed our opinions. In areas where the government hasn't mandated masks, they don't have to wear them. End of story.

It is your opinion that self-preservation (ie. putting the individual first) is a cultural flaw. Just because you don't like it, doesn't mean it's wrong to be that way. It's actually the opposite of wrong, scientifically it is a basic instinct that we're all born with.

The fact that people don't have to wear masks is "the end of the story" is part of my point. Both the lack of a directive and the "I don't give a shit about other people" sentiment is part of our moral failing as a nation.

Your reference to instinct is irrelevant. We have plenty of instincts that we have to fight to get through the day and function in society. Also, your response fails to account for any nuance. Of course we can and should watch out for ourselves but we also need to consider and watch out for our fellow Americans.

The last word is yours because I am heading out, but I will always not only mourn our failings (i.e. COVID aside, we are the only developed nation that regularly requires people to declare bankruptcy to pay medical bills) but fight to change them.

I don't disagree, especially in regards to healthcare. I'm just saying that if the government in different areas isn't mandating masks, people aren't going to wear them. Maybe that's selfish, but they don't have to. People are going to push back when they think the government is overreaching. I'm glad we live in a country like that. Imagine they could just make new rules that everyone had to live by, with no push back. Yeah, it seems like a no-brainer with masks, but imagine it was something you disagreed with. Imagine Cuomo was a Republican. We're ok with him potentially violating our constitutional rights when it's something we agree with. The problem is, once you allow that, it sets a precedent. Not just for his term, but for the leaders that are elected after him. That is a slippery slope.

In regards to human nature, yes that is a basic explanation that lacks nuance and we do fight other instincts to function in society, but like anything else, if there is no law requiring something, most people will still revert back to self-preservation, where their needs and wants are paramount. It's not a flaw, it's nature. I mean really, people murder other people to take (or defend) what's theirs. They had to make a law saying you can't murder people to deter most people from doing that. If you really don't believe in self-preservation, you would open your home to the homeless, or give all your money and belongings to charity. I'm sure everyone here that is able, donates to causes they care about, but within reason. We don't bankrupt ourselves to give to others. When I say "end-of story", doesn't mean I agree with things the way they are, but that IS how things are and our opinions can't change that.

I was at the beach and this man, not wearing a mask, started randomly verbally attacking a black man who was wearing a mask, sitting peacefully and happy with his mask on. The man without the mask started saying "you have to take it off sometime!" and the man in the mask was like "no thanks, I'm good" and the man in the mask was like "you need to breathe, breathe man. the air. everyone has to breathe" and the masked man said "I'm breathing just fine in this mask. You can breathe in a mask, I'm here doing it keeping you safe". and the other man started going ballistic after that and was almost fighting him to take his mask off. I didn't understand why the mask-less man even needed to open his mouth in the first place. It was very aggravating.

Also I was at a restaurant eating outside, near other stores, so our seat was by the bushes which separates the restaurant from the people walk alongside there. We were still wearing our masks at the table, we only took them off to eat. This man just stopped by the table we were eating at and just starts hacking spit in the bushes. I couldn't believe it. It was disgusting. Flinging spit into our area so gross. I felt like it was on purpose as when he was done and I looked at him horrified he smiled and winked and kept walking.

I HATE PEOPLE.

That's crazy! It sounds like that guy at the beach was drunk. Either that or completely nuts.
People spitting is just disgusting. That's something I have never been able to stand. I'm so repulsed when I see someone spit. I prob would have tried to take his picture and then called the police on him.

I got a peapod order in the middle of the lockdown. My kids were playing on my front lawn when they came. The guy walked up my front lawn and spit on it! I was seeing red! He was an older guy and I think it was just a bad habit of his. I don’t think he was doing it purposely, but still. Wtf is wrong with people!
