Rate of pay for sitter

Last October, I paid $15/hour for a HS Junior to stay with my 10-year-old daughter. I would have thought that $10 to $12 per hour would be the going rate, but I was wrong! Unfortunately, teenagers today expect the higher rate even when the kids are older (no diapers, feeding, etc.).

This. I pay $20/hr now to my sitter. Soon I'm going to start babysitting, too.

Re: Rate of pay for sitter

I pay between 10 and 12. My 2 sitters that I use are a college junior and a sophomore (my son's friends older sister). Honestly, if a sitter (especially hs age) tells me that they are 15 an hour, I don't use them. The only time I used a sitter for 15 was when my mom was in hospice and i was desparate. 15 an hour is more than minimum wage and off the books. I need my sitters to come and honestly, watch my kids watch tv. I usually feed them before a sitter comes and they are all ready for bed. I am not paying 15 for that (although I know I am in the minority!).

Wow- I babysat from when I was 12-17, three kids, and I got $6 an hour. PLUS once the kids went to bed I always straightened up, washed and put away dishes- hell I even vacuumed sometimes!! I remember asking for a raise from $3 an hour to $10 telling them my friend watches two kids older than your three and she gets 10$ an hour. They said wow hygienists make that kind of money. That’s when they upped me to $6.

And then I started using their phone to talk to my friends once their kids fell asleep

You must have worked in better neighborhoods than me because I was only getting 6-8. I still stand by my answer but to each his own. Most 16 year old kids don’t get paid 15 an hour anywhere. And back then minimum wage was much less. Right now it’s 11 an hour on the books. I don’t think 10 an hour off is obscene. But I guess I’m just lucky because I have great sitters. And for the record I always round up.

I babysat a 6 month old infant when I was 12!
My parents lived right across the street but still.
Then when he was 2, she had another baby and I started sitting for a 2 year old and 3 month old when baby #2 was 3 months old.
I can assure you I didn't make even close to $15-$20 an hour for all that in the early 90s!

I pay $12/hour for my three kids ages 2-10. My sitter is a college education student who works at a day care center. I do round up too.

I would not pay $15/hour to a high school student.

Re: Rate of pay for sitter

As long as there are people willing to pay $15 an hour to a high school kid to babysit, they will continue to demand it.
If people stop paying it, they will have to come down in their ask.

I never had a set rate when I babysat. Like I never said “pay me xx.” And no one who has babysat DD for a night out has, either. We pay about $20-25 an hour so maybe word got out that we’re generous.

Different families paid me different amounts. One family paid me $15 an hour for their 3 (young) kids. Another family would have me there 5 hours and pay me $20 for their 2 kids who were little nightmares. It never occurred to me to ask for more money! Except for one family, I hated doing it. I wasn’t a kid person, even back then. I got a part time job when I was 17 and never held another baby until I had DD 13 years later!

I pay $20 to my college-aged sitter. If I had a high schooler, I think I wouldn't pay above $15.

I remember when I babysat and made $5/hr!

Yea this is all outrageous. $15 for 2 kids is generous. Any more than that is robbery.

If they start asking for $30 an hour will we still be paying it?
It's ridiculous.

Rate of pay for sitter

In my neighborhood around $15 is the norm. More or less depending on how many kids.

Rate of pay for sitter

We pay our sitter who works at our daycare $20 an hour but she is older and goes above and beyond.

Our neighbor is starting to babysit and since she will just be more of a companion and I will only use her for shorter things - I will pay her less.

Whew, thanks, I thought $15 an hour was a lot. I was thinking $10-$12 per hour. Leaning towards $12 since it would be two kids. I want to to know what the range is when I ask what she is looking for per hour. I think she is a sophomore in HS and has no CPR training.
