Preparing kids for moving

So this is not happening immediately but after this next school year we will be moving. We will be doing work on the new place intermittently before moving there and putting our current home on the market. I know my 6 yr old will be devastated because she has so many friends in the neighborhood. My 4 yr old will be easier I think. If you have moved with children, how have you prepared them for it to make the transition easiest?

Preparing kids for moving

We plan on moving at the same time but my DD is young- she’ll be going to kindergarten at that point. Her little BFF is moving oos in a few weeks so we’ve talked a lot about moving and what happens when you move.

I think it depends on their ages and how far you’re moving. We told DD that after pre-k we’re going to move to a new house. She asked about her friends and I said we could still come visit them every once in a while (were only moving ~1 hr away). She seems to understand. The friend moving has been tougher because I think she’s having trouble understanding moving so far away that you may never see someone again.

Good luck! As much as I want to move the thought of the whole process is daunting and I get a little nauseous thinking about it!

Preparing kids for moving

I think it really depends on the kid. We moved last summer to N.C. and my 6yo dd was sooo excited to go. Yes, we did have some last moments where she cried with friends she knew she wasn’t going to see for a while again, but for the most part, she was super excited. Kids are resilient at that age. I wouldn’t worry too much. We FaceTimed a lot of friends in the beginning which helped too.

Re: Preparing kids for moving

We moved last year and while my children are younger, we just involved them in the process as much as possible. We took them house hunting. Once we purchased a house, we let them choose the color of their room, kept them involved in any new furniture purchases, and let them visit with us as much as possible while the house was under construction.
