Where to start?
I want to do a total gut renovation of my master bathroom. Where do I start? Find a contractor first? Decide on the design items (tile, vanity etc) and layout first? If you find a contractor first, do they come to see the space and then give you some ideas? Or do you go to a showroom and have someone give you ideas? I feel so clueless! Thanks for any help

Where to start?
We did ours last year and I would at least have an idea of how you want it to look (color scheme, etc) because once you hire someone, things move pretty quickly.
We hired a contractor who came with us to Home Depot to pick out the main things: flooring, tiles. We picked out the other stuff based on that.
Good luck! It's daunting, but it's so worth it. My bathroom is now my favorite room in the house.

I picked everything I wanted (vanity and top, tub, toilet, mirror, cabinet, tiles, lighting etc.) at all the different places as we were in the process of finding a contractor.
Showrooms can definitely help to look around in as well as houzz.com etc.
My contractor knew I chose what I wanted already and his job was to figure out how to best fit it in. I was realistic about my small bathroom and even though it was a gut, he only had to move some electric and the toilet plumbing.

Showrooms can definitely help to look around in as well as houzz.com etc.
My contractor knew I chose what I wanted already and his job was to figure out how to best fit it in. I was realistic about my small bathroom and even though it was a gut, he only had to move some electric and the toilet plumbing.
Same here. We knew how we wanted to design the space and the style when we hired our contractor. He talked through what we wanted and how it would all come together. He measured everything and we bought all the supplies (tile, paint, flooring, grout, vanity, fixtures, shelves and toilet).

But what if you're note sure what you want to do -and the cost will determine if you can do certain things - like going from 1 sink to 2 and maybe moving the toilet bowl? Those are a couple of things I would like to do, but whether or not I do them will depend on the cost

Start with a few contractors. They will give you an estimate. Then it works one of 2 ways - you either pay for everything you choose or you will have a budget for items (flooring, tile, vanity, fixtures, etc). If you go over, then you pay more.
If you want to do anything structural, like move a wall, you may need an architect because you need to be sure you aren't putting the structural integrity of your house at risk.
Changing from 1 sink to 2 is not really a big deal, though it does require running additional plumbing. Moving a toilet for sure will add more to the cost since you're moving plumbing instead of just replacing what's there.
