Kids w/ palate expanders

My DD just got a palate expander a few days so we’re getting used to it over spring break. She gets a lot of food stuck on top of it so I’ve been using the small brush the dentist gave me and having her rinse her mouth out after every meal. What did your child do at school though? I told her she should go to the bathroom after lunch and rinse her mouth. I can send her in with one of those bathroom-sized dixie cups in her lunchbox every day.

She has friends that had/have it in and she said she never saw them rinsing out or complaining about food stuck in there.

The first few days, everything my daughter ate got stuck. After that, I think she learned to keep food away because she rarely got anything stuck up there. You might find that the issue gets better after a few days. Good luck. I remember my daughter being very frustrated in the beginning.

It gets better after the first few days or even weeks. My son would get stuff stuck on the top while he was still getting used to it. Now its fine. a week or two after he got it we went to Miller's Ale House for dinner and we got nachos for an appetizer. He got a piece of Jalapeno stuck on the top and his mouth was burning. we had to dig u there with a fork to get it out, lol. But it's been like 2 months now and he's been good. He also has a lower expander and that one comes out when he eats. he recently broke that and we are now waiting for the new one to come.

It does get better in time. The dentist said for him to take smaller bites, especially anything that has bread, and to drink in between .

Thanks everyone. It has gotten better and she has figured out how to get the food out on her own.

My son said he takes it out with his tongue. He's had it in for a while now though and says he doesn't get food stuck in it anymore. They get used to it. Had to learn a different way to swallow and place your tongue in a different spot.
SHe'll get real used to it soon and forget it's there. I'm just happy I don't have to turn the key anymore!! He gets it taken out next week! Yay!
Then a retainer goes in. He's just excited to have some candies he hasn't had in a while and can't wait to have smores. LOL
