3yr old non verbal

I was hoping to get a little bit of guidance for a family member. They have 3 1/2 yr old boy who falls under the spectrum and is non verbal. The parents are looking to move on on LI but were wondering what if any services are provided and which districts they should be looking in? Currently, he has therapists come in to the home (city) and services are being cut due to budget. If anyone has any suggestions or tips as to where they need to begin etc. I would appreciate it. Thanks!

It depends, in the future the child may need out of district placement or alternative placement so it wouldn’t necessarily matter but, in terms of district, Harborfields school district is amazing, Levittown believe it or not has awesome services too. Most generous schools in terms of service that I’ve seen in my profession (I’m a bcba by the way) are Levittown, harborfields, great neck, port Jefferson (if attending center based) commack, Kings Park, Franklin square. That’s just from my exerpwice but I’m sure there’s more :)

I work in special ed in the city and have a DS who receives pre-school services on LI. I wouldn't really plan where I live based on services per se. It sounds like services are being cut because the child is now pre-school age, after early intervention, and services are provided differently. Is the child in a special education pre-school? I'm in a good district, and they are a little stingy with services. I find the city to be easier to fight if you have an advocate and know the system. On LI, I pushed and pushed, and even though I know the regulations, I couldn't necessarily get what I wanted for my son. There are also more options for school age in the city. I'd recommend they speak to a special education advocate.

My son is 6 and nonverbal. From the FB special need parent groups that I'm in, I hear that Half Hollow Hills and Commack are good districts. I live in a small district and there are very limited resources. I would advise her to join Long Island Special Education Network or SASI groups on FB and ask there.
