Newbie here!

Hey all! I am new to these boards but I've been reading up on them and it's great to see all the support and positive stories. I am a little overwhelmed.
We have done 5 cycles of IUI's (a couple of them were back to backs) with no success so I am starting IVF this cycle. My biggest worry right now is the decision for the chromosome testing on the eggs after retrieval. I am at RSONY and they quoted us as costing $5,500 to do this and I can't decide if we should spend the money and do it or if it isn't necessary. I just turned 36 so I am considered advanced maternal age so they recommend doing it to decrease chance of miscarriage due to bad egg but I just don't know. I had one daughter no problem whatsoever in 2014 and I had a miscarriage last November. This time have been trying since June 2016 and its been really hard emotionally which is another reason I would kick myself if I don't do the testing and then end up having a miscarriage that could have maybe been avoided. Any helpful advice is appreciated! Chat Icon

Welcome. That seems expensive for pgs. How much is the clinic charging you to biopsy and what lab are they using to test the embryos? I thought it was more like 2-3,000. I never tested my embryos in the past but am now testing them. It is a hard decision. If I had no know issues I'd probably do a round of IVF without pgs especially at 5,500. Good luck.

I actually have no idea about what lab they use or anything. Didn't even know I should ask that (i'm clueless lol)

They did say the $5,500 was for up to 8 eggs so I do wonder how that would work if I had less than 8 eggs to test. These are questions I need to ask.
My only known issues are cervix related from having a cone biopsy which wouldn't affect egg quality, my age, and having that one miscarriage.

Sometimes you can batch and hold if you are doing more than one retrieval to get to or close to 8 embryos. Say you get 3 blasts now you could batch and hold and then next cycle you get 4. You can then tell them to run the test. I am doing pgd and pgs for up to 8 and it wil be about 6k. Thats why it is odd to me you would pay so much for just pgs. My clinic charges a 700 biopsy fee. Maybe your clinic is charging a large fee for biopsy?

If you have ivf coverage maybe paying for pgs isn't so bad. If you don't it would be a lot to pay for ivf and pgs.

You could always do a round with pgs and see how you do. IVF 1 is usually figuring out what works for you.

Re: Newbie here!

Its a hard decision. My sister had 3 failed IUIs, a Failed IVF and then a failed frozen transfer, so they felt PGS testing was needed to ensure on the next cycle they would be transferring normal embryos.

It ended up that the first retrieval resulted in only 2 mosiac embryos so that transfer would have most likely failed as well. they then did another retrieval and ended up with 5 normal! She is now 14 weeks pregnant :)

That's a great story! Makes me feel even more confident that I should get the testing. Thanks so much and congrats to her!!!

Thanks and good luck to you! It stinks thats its just so costly otherwise it would be a much easier decision. But they had already spent sooo much out of pocket for the other procedures, that they would have been wasting even more money on additional cycles just to implant a bad embryo.

Re: Newbie here!

Every case is going to be different but for ME, knowing what I know about my embryos, I couldn’t see going through ivf without pgs. In each of my pgs cycles I saw firsthand how unbalanced the ratio was of normal vs abnormal embryos and would have otherwise walked into transfers doomed before I even got off the table.

That said, that seems like a high amount they’re asking for pgs. I’d shop around and see what your other options are or at very least ask for a cost breakdown or which genetics lab they’re using to justify that price.

Good luck!!!

ETA: Wanted to also add that I think it’s important when going into these cycles to have realistic expectations. I wish someone had explained to me before my first pgs transfer that it does not guarantee the pregnancy outcome- I wish I had gone in with that knowledge because truth be told, I had a few losses despite having done pgs and they took me by surprise.

They just told me today that their fee is $2,200 and then the lab charges $2,800 which insurance can't cover that part. Also it is for up to 8 eggs but if I only end up testing 2 eggs and then i'm done with it I still have to pay the full $5K and get nothing back. I just can't see myself switching places at this point. I am starting the birth control tonight and this is the only place I have been. I think it would stress me out completely to change places anyway. I'm still not sure if my meds are completely covered. I could be paying a couple hundred or like 8K for meds and that will make a difference on if I can afford to do testing as well. This is all very overwhelming!
