Please, let's not get into this over again. No one should have to continuously explain their opinions on something to people who will just come at them and tell them why their opinions are wrong.
But to the other posters who say "just start another thread" the point of this post was to highlight that we shouldn't need TWO threads. We shouldn't need two boards. We should all be able to have an intelligent conversation about our OPINIONS without it getting ugly. But in today's climate, unfortunately that is impossible.
I dont think everyone has to explain their opinions each and every time but its nice to know what someone is thinking and why. I truly try to be empathetic.
I am most interested in hearing from die hard T supporters who think he can do no wrong and always defend his every move and deflect (but hillary, but obama etc). Is this because of personal experiences? Hardships etc? I have read some books that explain the thinking (Hillbilly Elegy comes to mind).
I don’t think there are very many die hard trump supporters on here. The only did hard trump supporters I know on Long Island are over the age of 70 and I think it’s a generational thing. There are people who didn’t think that we were going to revert to pre civil rights era ideology with trump as president and I’m pretty sure quite the opposite has happened. And no one that I know is withOut healthcare despite the predictions on this site of people that knew people who would, with 100% certainty, DIE if trump was elected. Listen, I don’t like the guy. I don’t think very many people actually do but here and in real life if you dare say anything positive you must be a racist sexist pig.
Maybe you’re right they may not be on this page but they are not only over 70. I have had to unfollow die hards - male and female - whom I graduated HS with on western LI in the early 90s.

While I don't recall verbatim every post, I don't recall anyone saying they would die if he was elected.
What I almost fairly certain you are referring to is the poster who correctly claimed that people she knew would die if the health care bill passed. Fortunately, it was too cruel for Collins, Murkowski, and McCain so we dodged a bullet.
To minimize that angst and stress over something that loomed over the heads of many for months is the epitomy of the condescension you accuse others of.
Your anecdote about your circle means nothing anyway because with a small enough sample size you can prove anything. Actions were in fact taken to weaken Obamacare, which absolutely will hurt some people, although that effect is harder to quantify.

Where do you live?
I consider everyone in my neighborhood TUPO. Trump until proven otherwise. No one has proven otherwise yet.

I sometimes come on this board and laugh though - it shouldn't be called a "politics" board. Something like "Anti-Trump" or "Anti-Republican" would be much more appropriate. I don't want to quote since it's so long, but re: the lack of Trump supporters on LI. The people two doors down from us are already flying a giant Trump 2020 flag. They're definitely not 70. I feel very uncomfortable not being a Trump fan IRL (as opposed to the anonymity of the Internet), so I keep my opinions to myself.
Re: the "intellectually superior" thing. My career consists of assisting others in finding accurate sources for the questions they have. So I can't tell you how much it burns my @$$ (and this is not directed at lululu, I am just addressing the topic since it was brought up) when I provide those sources and I'm called a "liberal elitist." I had to unfriend my cousin because she said Snopes is biased when my grandmother posted a fake quote about Muslims attributed to Elizabeth Warren (my grandmother shares absolutely everything online, but that's another story for another time), and then said she did not care when she posted a fake George Washington quote about guns because it reinforced her point of view (she's also in her 40's, but she lives OOS). There is so much garbage on social media and people just take it as gospel truth, which I find incredibly dangerous. If that makes me come across as an elitist, so be it.
I am not a Trump supporter by any stretch of the imagination, but as far as politics go I am open-minded. There are Democrats in power right now who I am not a fan of, and we have an excellent Republican congressperson in our area who gets a lot done. I do agree that it is very difficult to be middle of the road in our climate: you either have to be one or the other or you're met with hostility and name calling.
My parents both voted for Trump. My father is a Republican and has been since I can remember, but he is also a small business owner and there were Obama policies that were effecting the growth of his business (having to pay tax on inventory in his stockroom even though it had been paid for and was sitting there for years, having to be at $0 at the end of the year as profit was taxed on, etc.). They felt that Hillary would have been 4/8 more years of the same. I have no idea if they still support him (see top paragraph).
Sorry this was long.

I didn't say anyone said that they would die - I said they said they knew people that would certainly die if Trump were to be elected. And yes, I was referring to it being because of his healthcare bill. And my point then, and my point now is that in our government no bill would pass that put millions of lives in jeopardy. I have my own worries - I worry to an abnormal degree - that N. Korea is going to start dropping nuclear bombs all over the US and we are all going to die. I am sure that others would tell me that I am being ridiculous and that clearly that is not going to happen. I wouldn't think they are being condescending. Different concerns for different people based on different experiences in life.... To each his own.
And you are probably right - I live in Western Nassau on the North Shore. I actually just went back and looked at the map of how Long Island voted in the 2016 election and while my particular area is mostly blue, Long Island does seem to be skewed to the right. People tend to not talk politics in the area that I live so I have not come across anyone that is a die hard Trump fan, or at least anyone that would openly admit it.

I don’t want to quote too much because that requires too much effort, lol.
I can understand people who post political posts on FB. It makes their voice be heard, so I get it. I don’t really post too much on FB anyway.
I’m going through some paperwork now that I need to do for a new job and they are busy checking if I’m a Scientologist or not. There are questions asking if I have ever done a reading or if I have read anything by Hubbard. It’s annoying. They are really strict on Scientology here in a Catholic state. I remember I had a student that wanted to do a presentation on Scientology and I had to really double check it, so I didn’t lose my job at that time.
They also want to make sure I’m not a member of certain political groups. I’m not. It’s just annoying to have to go through this paperwork. But some of the political parties listed made me shake my head.

I share something every once in a while. However i agree with you. The people i know who post politics daily or even multiple times a day are probably preaching to the choir (i know ppl unfollowing friends has happened a lot in the last couple of years).

Don't apologize for getting your feelings out there. I too, have been labeled a liberal elitist, when that is the furthest thing from the truth. I am not even affiliated with one specific political party . I decide on things based on how I feel on each individual issue, this Supreme Court nomination included. I refuse to buy into any of the conspiracy theories and things that I hear on the internet that aren't proven true without researching them. However, my opinions are based on history and our knowledge of how things have gone in the past.
I, like you and proud of my education and will make no excuses for that either

I would never minimize the fear of nuclear annihilation. Everyone is entitled to their feelings. But I don't think it's right to compare the abstract to the concrete. There's the fear of dying when you're perfectly healthy, and the fear of dying when you have cancer and you won't be able to afford the life saving medication that is keeping you alive. Two different things. And I think it's absurd to expect people in the second situation to sit back and just trust that the good ol' government is going to do the right thing. I remember vividly the harried, repeated attempts of last summer to repeal Obamacare and how its fate rested on, literally, a majority of ONE. I remember everyone eagerly awaiting the late McCain's entrance and his dramatic thumbs down. Nope. Sorry not sorry. They can't be trusted.
Just in general, as a former Social Studies teacher, I am stymied at how anyone can have so much faith in our government. With the amount of harm we have done to ourselves, other countries, by Presidents of every party...it's shameful.

I will never apologize for my education, historical knowledge, and ability to analyze issues.
There were several instances from 2 years ago when I would post links with actual facts (not editorials, facts) that would disprove what the opposition thought. Crickets. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but they are not entitled to their own facts.
I remember arguing with someone who didn't understand that federal funds never go to abortions.
I remember debating someone who had numerous facts wrong about entitlement programs.
Shit, I remember someone literally saying that they didn't care about facts. Just like that.
If you - general you - can't be bothered to acknowledge reality then yes, there are people on here who are going to make you look like a fool.
It goes both ways, too. A lot of times I won't repost from places like Occupy Democrats even if I don't disagree with the essence of what it's saying because it sounds extreme or I'm not 100% sure of the underlying facts.

The country is SO unbelievably divided that its gotten to a point where some people cannot have a civil conversation of difference of opinion. I'm tired of everyone assuming that people on the right are ultra conservative wackadoodles and I am MORE than tired of people assuming that those on the left are crazy and have a "disease". It's all such an arrogant, ignorant way of thinking all around.
All due respect to those that voted for Trump, but at this point there is no disputing that Trump fuels these fires. As a president you have an obligation to the country to try and unite and bring Americans together even if some citizens did NOT vote for you. Unfortunately, Trump has never stopped campaigning and instead of addressing us as ONE nation, as ALL Americans he consistently and methodically plays to his base ONLY and makes a point of turning one side on the other. The Dems are the enemy, the media is the enemy, etc etc. It is SO divisive to constantly call out one group and blame and criticize. All that does is fuel his base, get them all riled up and the divide deepens.
Until we have a president that recognizes NO good can come from ignoring half the country then we will continue down a path of hate, fighting, ignorance and division. These isn't even about politics anymore, this is about a loss of decency and respect for anyone who isn't "with you". In the past, even if you didn't vote for, like or agree with the president whoever was in office (at the very least) treated us as ONE nation, ONE country, ONE people. I think the way Trump behaves is a HUGE contributing factor to the massive divide and why everyone is so polarized.
To that end, social media has also unfortunately shown so many to have a distinct lack of education, intelligence, tolerance, and decency. Just because there is a platform to spew your thoughts and views doesn't mean you should. I don't mind opposing views but what I cannot stand is people perpetuating and spreading untruths, misinformation and lies. Just because something is online or in a meme does NOT make it true. When people spread these things under the guise of "fact" it creates more drama, more ignorance and more problems. What happened to fact checking and doing your due diligence before posting something? Nobody is helping the situation in this country by spreading lies.
It's all so aggravating, I truly feel this country has taken a turn for the worst. The economy may be doing well but this country, its people and our leaders are a disaster and an embarrassment. My only hope is that we can somehow come back from this and rebound to be a stronger, more cohesive nation.
Just my two cents.
