Anyone know about Maine?

DH and I would like to go to Maine this summer in early August.
Has anyone been there? What is the best area to stay in? Any suggestions on places to stay, visit, etc?

2 years ago DH and I took a road trip to Maine...but first stopped in RI and stayed over in Newport/Providence for the night.

Once in Bar Harbor, we stayed at the Quimby House Inn...it was a really nice bed and breakfast. I don't know what you're looking to spend but the Bar Harbor Hotel is soooo nice...but, expensive.

There is so much to do...whale watching tours, cruises, there is a strip of shopping, bars, restaurants and you have to go to Acadia National Park.

After Bar Harbor, we drove to Rockport, MA...which also had lots to see and do.

great, thanks! i was thinking bar harbor was the area to stay in. how far apart is everything?

All I can tell you is....when we went campling in Maine --- OMG!! It is beautiful BUT BRING A CASE OF DEET!!!!!!!!! YOU WILL NEED IT!!!!

Also too cold to swim in the ocean unless you wear a wetsuit.

We hired a boat to take us to this little island out of Bar Harbour, it was so beautiful but I can't remeber the name...

Oh and by the way BE SURE TO BRING DEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I went to Maine once and a long time ago...they have these great outlet stores over there.. I forget the name though..Chat Icon

Deet is HEAVY DUTY BUG REPELLANT.

Be sure whatever you get has Deet in it, it's the strongest there is...oh and BTW, you will need it...lol...that's ok tho, I hear the same about Alaska and we just booked our cruise there for peak bug season, so I'll be buying a case of it too!!

They're in Freeport.


My family has been going to Maine since my mom was a little girl. My grandmother owns a cabin on one of the lakes (inland). I've never stayed on the coast. Just taken day trips there.

I think that most people that visit go to Bar Harbor. Ogunquet (sp?) is also nice. And there's Kenibunkport (sp? again)-(where George Bush Sr. vacations.) You could probably google the state and find their tourist page. That could get you started.

It's a great state to visit. I love going up there. DH and I will be spending a week in August there.

MY FILS love Maine...They go to some hotel in Algonquet (sp??) they talk about it all the time it seems really nice
