Repost from NFR for Crafters: What are your thoughts?

What are your thoughts?

I make wooden signs - you know, the old fashioned type, folk art - they are wooden and then I paint them with acrylic paint and decorate with either wooden letters or handpainted sayings. I made one for example that says "sweet dreams" and another that says "casey's corner" decorated with pawprints and bones etc. I'll try to post pics later.

My town is having a street fair in September. I just started over the summer and really like doing it. I don't think I'll have enough to actually sell in September but I think I'd be able to set up a table and display what I've made and take special orders. I would personalize the items how ever the customer wants - sayings, colors, etc.

Would you or someone you know want one made for your room, or a kid's room or for your pet? Or even for your TV room, etc? My DH says he thinks people won't put in orders and will only buy it right then and there. The town I live in is very local -oriented so I would put a sign up saying "local vendor" and I think this would help. I think people would feel better about ordering if they knew I live right in town.

What do you guys think?

ETA: I didn't make the one pictured but what I make is just like this:

I for one am a big sucker for signs like that!! I love them!!

As far as taking orders...I have been to many craft fairs where I have seen people taking orders.I have even ordered stuff from vendors on order and have never had a problem getting my orders! Chat Icon

Where is the craft fair?? I love craft fairs!! Chat Icon

Good Luck to you!!

I love stuff like that and when personalized, it's always a big seller!!!

You could also do simple ones that say "I Love Cows" and have smaller cows hanging from the pegs.

I'm sure a coffee theme would be awesome for a kitchen "You're the cream in my coffee" "You're my cup of tea"

I think people will order them, too. But I would try and make as many as you can before then to sell that day, you can also take pics so you can show people samples after they are sold. Good luck!

I agree, you should give it a try. Take orders but try to have a wide variety of inventory for the show. I'd advertise that you are a local craftsperson too. People would give orders and I'd be even more inclined to do so knowing the person was from my town. IMO, I wouldn't use the word "vendor" though b/c to me it sounds like you are just selling stuff, not that you made it yourself. Have some handouts too for ordering in case someone wants to order at a later date!
