I always found everyone else's stories so helpful, so I finally found a few minutes to sit and write this out.
Just to preface the story, I was 2 cm dialated on Tues. 9/12. My due date was Sun. 9/24.
Don't know if you remember but it started out early monday AM (9/18) with a post about whether or not my water broke or if I lost control of my bladder. I honestly wasn't sure for a while. Well it turned out to be my water....that was 4:45 AM. I was not feeling any contractions yet. By the time I figured it out, called the DR, took a shower and got to the hospital...it was 7:50 AM and the contractions were getting pretty strong.
They hooked me up to a monitor and checked me and I was still 2 cm They moved me within the hour to my delivery room. The contractions were about 2 mins apart and getting strong. When the OB came in to check me, I was up to 3 cm. She said it would take about an hour a cm.....so here i was facing 7 more hours of this and decided it was epidural time.
The anethesiologist (sp?) came in and gave me the epi (the worst part pain-wise, other than the contractions, IMO was the shot of novicane preceding the epi). Once that was done....all pain gone and totally worth it!!! Unfortunately, the epi relaxed me too much. DH and I passed out for about an hour. Apparently my contractions were now further apart and less intense. They hooked a monitor up to my uterus to measure the intensity and put me on pitocin to increase the frequency of the contractions. They went back to 2 mins apart and after another hour....I has progressed to 3.5cm
At that point OB decided a c-section was the way to go. She basically felt like this was mother nature's way of telling me a vaginal birth was not going to happen. She was concerned that even if his head came out....his shoulders may not. We already knew that at 37wks a growth sono measured him at 8.2 lbs.
I told her part of me wanted to wait it out, but I didn't want to push for 3 hrs and then have to do a c/s anyway. So we figured, lets just do this and meet our little guy already!!!
So......at 2:48 PM on Sept 18, 2006 Jack Robert entered the world with the cutest chubby cheeks ever!!!!! He weighed in at a whopping 9 lbs 11oz. and measured 22 inches long.
All of the staff at Winthrop were amazing....especially the nurse who made sure to reassure me that I definitely would have pushed for 3 hrs and had to do a c/s anyway!!!
