How about The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova? It's kind of gothic in genre. A good mystery/thriller. I"m liking it.

Wasn't a big fan of Rule of Four. Didn't see the similarity to DaVince Code at all.

I haven't read the Dan Brown books, but I'm currently reading The Dante Club. It's a historical fiction mystery about a series of murders patterned after events in Dante's Inferno. A group of "real-life" poets and scholars (ie. Oliver Wendell Holmes, Longfellow) figure out the pattern. I'm 1/3 of the way through and I'm really enjoying it. I think it might be in the same vein as what you're interested in.

Along the same lines of those books is Daughter of G-d by Lewis Purdue. I actually read that book first thinking it was Dan Brown. The author just sued Dan Brown for copyright infringement (and lost). It's amazing!!!

ETA: Dante club is also amazing. I really enjoyed that one!

The Intelligencer (I forget the author). It goes back and forth between modern day and England in the time of Christopher Marlowe. Spy thriller-ish.

Honestly, I think I am the only one who wasn't crazy about the "davinci code". The albino got on my nerves.
