That's why when you live in a city like NY, you have the opportunity to bring your kid to some fantastic places. My son went to a Basquiat exhibit with me at the Brooklyn Museum when he was 3, COUNTLESS trips to the Hall of Science and Museum of Natural History... The Yard in Brooklyn (yummy house music) and PS1 in the summertime =) a huge house party in Ft. Greene park 1st of every month in the summer (more house music)

It must be hard when you live in east bumblef*ck... though I have to admit, I do get off on the joy in my son's face when I bring him to these play places...

see, I think that stuff is cool.

but my fear is that when they go to school, or friends parties and stuff and then I will be the bad mom that doesn't let them have their party someplace or won't go to Disney.

I guess, I just want me kids to love their life. and I want the things I WANT to show them to be things that they'll like...and not have them sad b/c of the things we don't do.

I had the worst bday parties out of all of my friends, b/c we were so poor.

irrational fears...just things that stay with you I guess.

JessinCA, I think other people would take them...if I LET them, that is lol

My parents did take us to Disney once or twice when we were growing up and we did enjoy it. But my parents took us on a lot of great trips...many much more memorable than Disney. My parents didn't feel the need to take us on these child-friendly vacations only. We went to places including Italy, Germany, Mexico the Domincan Republic. It was great!

My parents weren't about to let a bunch of kids 'ruin' the vacations that THEY wanted to take. Chat Icon That being said, I don't think taking your kids (or not taking your kids) to Disney/Sesame Pl/Chuck E Cheese is what makes or breaks you in the parenting department.

I like Disney, although I haven't been since college so after my trip the end of April, Icould change my mind.

Chuck E Cheese on the other hand? Forget it. Not in a million years. DH and I always said if we ever got to have a child there would be no Barney and no Chuck E Cheese.

When I was a kid we had bowling or rollerskating parties, or the party was at home.

And I'm 50/50 about clowns. I do like going to the circus and didn't used to have a problem with clowns until I read It from Stephen King.

one of my first parties as a tween, my parents told all my friends from the block to come up to my house.

no chips. no juice boxes.

boiled HYGRADE hotdogs on WHITE BREAD and kool aid in a plastic cup.

everyone was grossed out. I was mortified. and sad.

to this day, if it ain't kosher beef, I won't buy it Chat Icon

I've never been to disney, nor do I plan on it. It just doesn't interest me for some reason. It just seems like a lot of work and not too much fun, imo.

As for Disney...I've never been. The only way my daughter saw it was when my mother took her when she was about 9 yrs old. I have NO desire to go there either.

Sorry to crash, but wanted to add my .02 cents.

You can take your kid to Disney and NOT become a Disney mom. We plan on taking DD in about 9 months for the first time. She will be 27 monts old.

I am complety looking forward to it because I love Disney. Meaning the park. I do not and will not dress DD in character clothing. No bedsheets or towls, quilts and whatnot is in her room.

She watches Mickey Mouse Clubhose on weekend mornings. So she knows who Mickey is, but only to that extent.

Not to say you have to take your DC to Disney, but that's the other point of view.

I would be the most boring mother ever. My kid would hate me. I'm not into ANY of that kiddie stuff, can't stand it! I don't like cartoons, toys, clowns, disney characters, etc.

Yeah that's me. I just don't relate well to kids. I can't sit through an animated movie.
All my friends love The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast (for themselves not their kids I mean) and I have never even seen one of those movies. No interest.
Even Shrek, etc that is more geared towards adults I don't go for.

The closest I get to a cartoon is the Family Guy! Chat Icon

I'd so be his friend, especially if they still serve the pizza squares & the little choc/vanilla ice cream in the paper cup.

I think I only had 4 birthday parties , including my sweet 16 in my living room.

My parents never took us, either. My first time in a Disney park was the summer I worked there!

I get overwhelmed at Chuck E. Cheese, particularly because I once took a girl I was watching ther and there's a ride where you sit in a car with a plastic Chuck E and it takes pictures. She runs over while I was with her little sister and hands me a stack of rather....ummmmm....provocative pics of her and Chuck E. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I went to disney world for the first time for new years eve with DH and his friend and wife and I HATED IT!!!

I hated the crowds, didn't find the rides that exciting, and found the characters a bit annoying. I wouldn't mind never going back! Chat Icon
