My son, Gregory, is 8 and is multiply- disabled. At first glance, he appears like any other child. He is small for his age (40 lbs). He has a very severe seizure disorder. His grand mals are controlled, but he has hundreds of 1-5 second seizures (myoclonic, atonic, absence) daily. He has little to no language (some word approximations), but he seems to understand everything that is said to him. He has some ASL skills and can communicate his needs appropriately. He has a swallowing disorder and can drool a lot at times. He has ataxia ... which when his seizure level is high ... can cause him to fall frequently. Normally, he just walks with an unsteady gait. He cannot run, jump or play like "normal" children can, but he gets around pretty good. He is a gentle, loving, affectionate child who loves other children. However, we are not finding other friends easily because of his seizures and lack of school placement. He is currently taught at home with home and center based therapy programs. My children are a little younger, 2 y/o and 8 months old but we love playdates! I go to the park with a couple of other mommies from the boards and we always welcome new people. Posted 1/7/09 8:43 AM |
