Does anyone have an "Explosive" Child?

I am in the middle of getting Ava (4 1/2) re-evaluated through the district.

So far, they know she has sensory issues and anxiety, and the Psychiatrist that we went to says possibly mood problems. She suggested we read "The Explosove Child".

I am devastated. Life has been soooo difficult for the past 2 1/2 years, and I am soo sad to think that she will always be this way...Chat Icon

Any advice or experience.

Thank, Tara

Have you read The Out of Sync Child? I am not a parent, but I do frequently recommend this book to parents of children with sensory issues. I hope this helps Chat Icon

Hi, I'm a speech therapist who has worked with children with both language disorders and sensory processing disorders in the past and its been my experience in working alongside these children's OT's that if the sensory system is out of balance it can lead to all kinds of behaviors. Is your daughter currently seeing an OT trained in sensory integration? IF so how's her profile reading? Is she a child seeking sensory input or defensive to sensory input? A sensory defensive child can tantrum just by having their personal space being threatened. Working out the sensory issues can be a key factor in trying to work out her radical mood swings. Talk to your OT about setting up a sensory diet and The out of sync child is a fantastic book and it has a sister book the out of sync child has fun which has great activities in it for you to easily carry over at home. Hope this helps.
