My rather unexpected birth story!

Let me start by saying that my little boy is making progress each day and doing good in the NICU......hopefully to come home sometime next week Chat Icon He was born at 34 weeks 3 days
So, my story begins early last week when I started having some spotting .....I had a regular appt and there wasn't too much concern because I wasn't having any cramping or any other symptoms.....so basically I just took it easy and it stopped by Friday. On Saturday I had my shower (which was great!) and Sunday morning I woke up not feeling so great---just exhausted, with spotting again and a slight back ache---I told DH I would take a nap and if I wasn't feeling better I would call the OB service #----well, when I woke up the spotting was slightly more, so I called and they told me to come into L&D. We got there around 7pm and imagine my & DH surprise when I got hooked up to monitors that I was already having contractions every 3-5 minutes, 1cm dilated & 100%effaced!!
So, the plan was to try fluids & meds to see if they could slow me down. I did respond to the first medication and at this point, I sent DH home to set the dog up for the night and grab me some basic stuff (toothbrush, etc) because they told me I would definitely be staying overnight---I also told him to grab my bag that I just started packing as well (I recommend having this done early as I did not have everything packed!)
Well, by the time he got back, the contractions had sped back up and weren't responding to the second medication and when they checked me I was continuing to dilate. At that point, my OB & the high risk doctor decided either I would stop on my own or we were going to have a baby! I was in total shock---I felt so unprepared and overwhelmed. We met with the NP from the NICU, but I don’t think I heard a word she said. My DH was great in just keeping me calm, making me listen to my IPOD and just try to relax as much as possible.
At this point they moved us into a delivery room and told me I could get the epidural when I wanted. For me, it was such a tough decision because I really felt as soon as I said yes to the epidural that it meant this was really happening. I made it until about 3am when I was just in too much pain. The anesthesiologist was great and I felt so much better after---I did have one area that I could feel things, but it ended up helping when it came time to push because I knew when the contractions were.
After the epidural things continued to move along, my water broke and by about 10am I was ready to push. I kept asking the nurses for pointers since I hadn't finished my labor classes yet, but it is so true that instincts just kick in and I was fine without any class or book. I only pushed about 25 minutes and then my beautiful boy was born—he was a screamer!! During the whole delivery he was never in any distress, but due to his age he had to go the NICU. My DH was telling all the nurses that the first thing he is buying our son is a calendar and a watch since he clearly didn’t know that he was early!
I guess thru all of this I have learned that you can’t plan for everything and even though we were totally unprepared, instincts still kick in and get you thru it. I still can’t believe he is here already, and while the last few days have been a challenge to say the least (especially since I came home), I am so thankful he is here and being so well cared for in the NICU. Any prayers or good thoughts are appreciated---I can’t wait to have my little peanut come home!
