We live in Massapequa and got the call but I didn't know he/she died. Jeez!!!! Does anyone know if we should be very worried? My DS is in Kindergarten but there could be a sibling or a cousin or....I don't even know much about it.

Massapequa Teen Dies From Meningitis
NEW YORK (CBS) ? A 17-year-old Massapequa High School student has died of meningitis.

The senior played in the Saint Rose of Lima CYO Basketball League.

He also worked part-time as a stock boy at the King Cullen in Massapequa Park.

The Health Department is advising individuals who have had close contact with the teen to seek preventative treatment. Those who shopped in the grocery store where he worked or had casual contact with him do not need to seek medical attention.

ETA: i got the same call, but it didn't say he died. i know it says not to be but i shop at that King Kullen all the time and i am a little freaked out.

Try not to worry over that, according to my SIL, it's not something that can spread in any way like that. I shop there too. My son is little but he's in the school system which freaks me out!! If he has a sibling or anyone close but we'll hear about it if that's the case.

His poor family!!!! That poor boy with his whole life ahead of him. Chat Icon

I'm assuming it was probably bacterial meningitis? I am always so worried about it b/c anyone can get it (+ I am a hypochondriac Chat Icon ) I think what happens is that most people mistake the symptoms of meningitis for the flu or something similar and than dont get treatment right away and than it is too late.

I remeber years ago, a teen who went to hs with my brother had it and passed away from. It was all over the news.

Isn't there a vaccine for bacterial meningitis now? I remember I got it before I went away to college. I thought kids got it much younger these days though. But I guess there are different strands.
