My birth story (a little long) with PICS!

As you already know from my numerous posts and complaints, I had been having contractions since 25 weeks, so I really didn’t think much of the fact that I was contracting throughout the day on Thursday, 10/11. I worked until 7pm and then came home, exhausted and just feeling generally yucky. At that point I had a hormonal meltdown, crying to DH, saying that I just wanted pregnancy to be OVER! Then I went to sleep…

Fast forward to 2:30am on Friday, 10/12. Woke up to pee, as usual, and noticed pinkish discharge on the TP. Looked in the toilet bowl and there was a slight bit of blood. At that point I had a feeling that this was it, so I woke up DH and we decided to start getting our things together and washing up - we anticipated having to go to the hospital sometime in the morning. ..

Well, things happened much more quickly than expected. At 3:07am I had a slightly more painful contraction than my usual. Five minutes later I had another one. That lasted for about 30 minutes, and then they started coming 3 minutes apart. By 4:15am I was having excruciating contractions every 2-3 minutes and I feared that I might give birth on my kitchen floor. So we literally rushed to the hospital and forgot half our stuff – luckily we remembered the cameras!

Got to the hospital at 4:30, and was 5cm dilated and 100% effaced. I decided that I wanted an epidural but we had to wait for bloodwork to come back. Meanwhile, the contractions were coming on so strongly and so frequently that I barely had time to rest in between then. I’m not going to lie, it was the worst pain I could ever have imagined.

Got the epidural at 6am, and after that the labor process was wonderful. Honestly, not feeling the pain of the contractions allowed DH and I to savor the excitement and anticipation of having a baby. Getting the epidural itself was relatively painless and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

The doctor came in to check me at 6:30am and I was 8cm, so he broke my water and let everything progress. The nurse had me sitting upright to encourage the baby to move down the canal quickly. By 9am I was ready to push, and the first round went well. But for the second round of pushing they had me in a position that the baby didn’t like and he had a pretty severe heart rate deceleration. At the point there was talk of an emergency c-section if the heart rate didn’t recover, but luckily it did. I was never so scared in my life as I was during those few minutes where I was so worried about my baby… Thank God, I was able to keep on pushing and before I knew it the whole thing was over and Jonah had arrived!!! Here are some of his first pics – the second and third feature his “coming home outfit”.
