Cat urine and cleaning it up

I have two cats, one of which thrives on cleanliness and has a tendancy of peeing outside the liter box.
Most of the time it's on the bathroom rug, but she's been known to go on the couch and my clothes.

Does anyone have any sure fire tips to get the smell out....

OR BETTER YET...

Does anyone know what I can do to keep this from happening?

Thanks! Any tips welcomed!

I don't have cats so I don't know what to tell you about them missing the litterbox, but Nature's Miracle is what you'd use for the urine smell. It works! (for dogs and cats). PetSmart carries it.

Ugh, Jenn that stinks. Is it a kitten that isn't litter trained or one who has suddenly stopped using the box?

Lets just say that she's spiteful, and gets mad when the other cat stinks up the box. I live in an apartment, and really don't want another unsightly liter box in the house.

PLUS, the other cat would use that box too. They don't share well.

If putting in the washing machine throw in a cup of vinegar (white) it will definitely take the smell out completely. My niece had a jacket a cat urinated on and that was the remedy to get rid of the smell. It works like a charm

That's a fantastic tip! Do you put detergent in with that as well, or just the vinegar?

NATURE'S MIRACLE is a god send.

Your cat might not like the particular brand of litter. Has she gone IN the litter box before and then stopped?

My grandmas' cat did this, but with poop....he didn't like the covered litter box and stopped when she took the cover off the litter box

I agree with the previous posts about Nature's MIracle - I think they actually make one specific for cats too.

Have you ever considered getting one of those self-cleaning litter boxes? Perhaps that would prevent her from using the rug when the litter box is dirty.

Yea, I have considered it, and probably leaning toward it.

Thanks so much to all who answered!!

Another vote for Nature's Miracle! We get it from Petco. You may need to treat the area a few times to get rid of the urine smell completely.

A trick that I read online somewhere to get your kitty to stop peeing in a particular spot is to put their food bowl in the area where they pee (after it's all cleaned up, of course!). A cat typically won't pee where it is being fed.

Also - not to scare you or anything, but, a cat peeing outside of the litter box can be a sign of a urinary tract problem. One of our cats did that and eventually ended up with a urinary tract blockage in which we had to rush him to the vet for treatment (he's fine, thankfully!). My vet told me that cats with urinary tract problems who experience pain when they pee associate the pain with the litterbox, and so, they pee outside the box.

Good luck with your kitty! Chat Icon
