Background check

I was offered a job yesterday, which i really want. They told me the offer was contingent upon a background check. I have to fill out a form with my name SS# drivers licence#, and names and addresses of last 2 employers, including the current.
WHat exactly are they going to do? I know they cant call my current employer, they said they wouldnt. What is going to happen?

Ok, I have nothing to hide, I was just worried that they were going ot call my current job and speak to them. THAT would not be ok.
