Greece - Crete to Santorini Q for those that have been or are in the know

I'm going to Crete (Chania) for ten days in August and would really like to go to Santorini for a few days. I've looked and it seems like to fly, we'd have to fly back to Athens and then to Santorini.

So, I was thinking maybe a Ferry. I've looked at the Ferry websites but, they are so confusing!

Have any of you been? Do you know if you can take a ferry from Crete to Santorini? If so, how long does it take? Is there a website that is more user friendly?

We had to fly back to Athens first - there was a lot of flying involved in our honeymoon!
I don't know anything about the ferry - sorry.

I heard the ferries can be really sporadic in service - especially in the summer months.

Hydrafoils might be a better bet - for some reason I'm remembering them being different than ferries.....
