Twas the nite before the ELA

Twas the nite before the ELA
and all nerves were around
the pencils were sharpened
and tests were still bound

The students were sleeping
not a worry in their heads
for they didnt know
of pressure from NYSED

The teachers were concerned
for they were pondering the thought
"What more could I have done,
what else should I have taught?"

"Should I again have gone over
the key words and bubbles?
I wish that those little circles
were the least of my troubles!"

"They read and they listened.
They undelined and wrote.
I practically shoved reading skills
right down their throat!!!"

And still the teacher pondered
and reviewed and thought
Was there anything else to be studied?
Any workbooks that could have been bought?

So as test time fast approaches
and the students wake up
The teacher picks up the packets
and sets the desks up

The quiet in the room
brings the teacher to tears
Praying and hoping
their students would rest all fears

And when the first student
enters the room with a smile
the teacher can relax
and be distracted for a while

To the bathroom, to the bathroom
off you go, hurry up!!!
Clear off your desks
Put away all your stuff.

With a deep sigh
and a silent prayer
the teacher passes out pencils
hoping the knowledge is still there

"Turn to page 1
and begin the test"
The teacher walks around
There's no time to rest!

Check the bubbles, check the names
Look for skipping and for errors
The teachers across NY states
were still the test bearers

At the ten minute mark
they are almost done
Only bit more to go
as for Book 1

"Pencils Down! The test is over"
The teacher states
The audible sigh from the class
reverbrates

First collect the packets
then take back the pencils
Don't get too relaxed
No time to rest on your laurels

For tomorrow again
the teacher will pay
The price of teaching a class
that takes the ELA!!!
