are you a "yeller"?

Some teachers have a way of handling their class without ever raising their voices.... others seem to yell all the time.

I tend to "teach loudly" to begin with - my colleagues can hear me down the hall! When a situation warrents it, I will yell, but I hate when that happens.....

What about you?

I am a loud teacher as well, but I don't tend to actually yet at the kids. Trust me, I have, but I don't think it's very effective if it's something that's done too often. Kids just filter it out. I do the waiting thing and just look at the kids, when one or two see me they shush the class for me. Must easier on the vocal cords.

This is just my opinion, but not yelling has often worked well with me. I find that if you yell too much the kids eventually tune you out.

im not a yeller - but i have dirty looks down pat!

I think I lose my temper once a year. Even then, I never raise my voice. I think it's very effective...those kids sure know when I'm pi$$ed!

After so many years, I think I'm one of those teachers who commands the class without yelling at all.

I don't yell. But, I get stern with my voice if I need their attn. I also feel like calling individual names works too.....when I do an "excuse me" or loud "shhhhhh" it rarely works. If I use names, it grabs their attn. more..

Nope... I refuse to yell. I'm actually very soft spoken and it works well for me. We also have a system w/in my school with raising your hand that's universal with our kids.

I don't refuse to yell, but I find that after teaching for 6 years, I really don't have to yell anymore. I think it's a part of the maturation and control process of teaching. I definitely have the look and the scary serious voice down, but I haven't had to yell in a while. I teach 7-12th grade, yelling definitely scares the younger kids, but I think it causes you to make enemy with the older ones. JMO!

I am so loud to start with that if I ever yelled I don't think they would notice I do the hand raising thing. If not I stare at the clock. They know when I start staring that if they waste more than 1minute of my time that is 10 minutes after school 10:1 ratio. Somehow we never ever seem to hit one minute.

i am a loud talker to begin with... i do the opposite.. if the kids are not behvaing I stop what I am doing go sit at my seat, fold my arms and look at the clock... then i softly say for every minute you waste on our time you will make it up during playtime... Works evey time!!!

I never had to yell when I taught. I used to have this behavior chart that was set up by the rows in the classroom. When a row was being noisy, I would give them red checks and that would shut them up immediately. Their red checks took away their (good) blue checks.

I am a loud talker...I have yelled on occasion BUT I find that the more you yell the more they do not listen and then keep talking...no win situation

The teachers in my school who yell tend to be the ones with the worst management, and since they yell the administration takes more notice of them.

I don't have a big voice, so I do sometimes have to yell to be heard, like when I go into a couple of classes after teachers who have no control over the class. But I don't yell in anger- it doens't work for me.

I'm loud when necessary...but I'm more of a dirty look-giver.....I got it down reeeeeeeal good, usually don't even have to speak.

I too am a loud talker but I recently found that I have nodules on my vocal cords and have been going for voice therapy...ever since...my kids have been really good with my soft spoken voice...they can't talk or make noise over me cuz they might not hear me!! They know when I am upset or mad cuz I just sit at my desk and look at each of them!

Never yell, it is funny one of my kids said "How come you don't yell like my mommy or Mrs. ? from last year".
I never see a point with the little ones. I have first grade so if I want them to quite down I go low not high. It works!
