This sounds a lot like The Know-It-All by AJ Jacobs. He read the entire Encyclopedia Brittanica. It's a really fun book, but I might like reading about the OED even more!

Isabel Allende is probably my favorite author.

And the dude is pretty quirky/funny ... and I found out went to my high school!! (But I think after me!)
